How to get a room upgrade??

Hello,

Have 3rooms booked at a hotel in Spain. Would really love it if one of the rooms could be upgraded(as that will come with a balcony the 6of us can use), although would rather not pay the big prive tag for the upgrade. Its a 5* hotel in Spain, for 2nights starting a week on Sunday.

I was wandering what you think the best way of asking/trying to get one is. I was thinking about sending the front office/reception a letter/or email saying its a special occasion, would really appreciate it etc. How are Spanish people with these kinds of requests? Can anyone help here

Thanks

I reckon the best way is to pay for it

Nothing else will guarantee it. Do you definitely want an upgrade?

If so, do as I said.

If not, do as you said!

I was lucky enough to win a holiday to Hawaii last year, staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village on Waikiki Beach. A couple of weeks before we went I emailed the hotel and told them how much I was looking forward to staying there and asked if there was any chance of an upgraded room. I didn't hear anything back but, when we arrived, we were upgraded from a city view room in the cheapest tower to a deluxe ocean view in the most expensive! Give it a go, you've got nothing to lose. Good luck!

Sorry but why should you be entitled to an upgraded room just because it's a 'special occasion'?
If you want the better room, pay for it.
If, for example, it was my birthday, I wouldn't go into Tescos and demand they gave me extra goods because it was a 'special occasion'.
Basically what you're proprosing is essentially begging.

Companies utilise clever computer software to avoid the need to upgrade and maximise revenue, same software also checks to see if employees try to unreasonably upgrade bookings without payment.

No no, hotels, for example the one i used to work in often had availiability, in the offseason(like mid march) i doubt that this hotel will be full in availiability hence the price of the rooms and flights to the city. It was only their standard rooms that was heavily doscounted. Knowing the hotel chain, time of year etc, an upgrade is possibile if they have availiability, i am just curious what i should say in writing an email/letter to them that would help my chances bearing in mind that it is a Spanish hotel.

    Thanks

Ps. I aint a begger, i just like value for money :-D

Why exactly do you think they should give you a free upgrade?

Are you a member of their frequent visitor club? Have you stayed in many of their hotels before?

Are you a member of their associated airline frequent flyer club?

Are you likely to book a superior room in the future?

He doesn't think they "should", he just hopes that they will... it's not the same thing! If the room is empty and available then there's virtually no extra cost to the hotel so they might consider it for the sake of giving a better customer experience thus increasing the chances of return custom, word-of-mouth recommendations, etc? Or am I just hopelessly naive :)

But clearly the chances are not great, which is fair enough or indeed no-one would ever be willing to pay extra for the better rooms!

Correct, i dont think, of course not, i just hope they might, and wandering what to say in a letter that could help my chances. I am a member of SPG, the hotels chains loyalty program, though not at the status that recieves free upgrades though. I thought seeing as we have 3rooms booked, and would only like one room upgraded so we could all enjoy the benefits that the balcony there would bring. The upgrade price is £100, would not pay this, though would happily spend 15mins writing a letter if it would help my chances.

    Any key words/advice etc????

im writing the letter this afternoon when i get a in. so come in with the tips soon guys...thanks

Given that there are 6 of you in the party and you will all get some use out of the balcony etc why dont you just chip in £16.66 each and hey presto one of the party gets an upgrade and you all get the use of the improved facilities.

    all the best

Tell them why you are going, why you want it to be a memorable weekend, how you enjoy their hotels/locations etc. Don't forget to tell them that you are a member of their frequent stayer club.
