I have had this problem too, but my council allows you to pay to upgrade your bin size, mine cost £16.50, maybe worth asking?

    What an excellent suggestion

I've seen those nappy bins in shops but never really figured them out, they look like a bin with some sort of refills, but not been able to see if they really do anything clever or useful?

Thats exactly what they are. A bin that wraps the nappy up, sealing it tight instead of needing individual nappy bags. They continue to wrap and compact nappy's inside the bin until the compartment is full, which is when you empty all the nappy's into main bin. It will save space, but might be worth looking for special offers or even freecycle/ebay as they are costly to begin with. You will also need to factor in cost of buying the refill cassettes.

OK I did assume that most rubbish bins are a similar size, though I have seen tiny ones for flats. So I might well be wrong about that. The point I made was that as we don't even fill ours half-way surely that should leave plenty of room for disposables - though again I confess I have no idea how much space a fortnight of nappies would take up. If their bin is considerably smaller than that is the only way I can understand how it wouldn't fit.

On the other hand, the stench of fortnight old nappies in a bin must be vile especially in summer. Is there a tip that you can take them too? That would save your nose and space in your bin.

I know our local council won't completely empty bins if you have used a compactor, if the waste doesn't freely fall when it's lifted onto the bin lorry they press a button that bumps the bin slightly, if it doesn't empty after two presses it's left as it is.

The only other way they can be emptied is for a person to lean in and pull the waste out and that would go against health and safety.

Withabix you are right that they can't stop you using them but you also can't make them climb inside your bin to fully empty it.

Unlikely to happen unless you try and wedge rigid things in your bin horizontally, ram the stuff in so much that you bulge the sides or have unusually adhesive contents.

Most wheelie bins widen from bottom to top, so physics overcomes the compaction IF your dustbin men operate the bin lifters on the RCV correctly.

Thanks for the responses, it's good to see some councils have various solutions to assist end users and I will put them to North Wilts. Yes we currently have a small bin, a few years ago there was just my wife and I and it was more than adequate.

I had a further response from the council and it appears they haven't changed any bin size limits since halving the collections - so any household that regularly used more than 50% of the bin space will now be having issues. The council also said they don't currently have any officers available to talk to us about this, can't say I'm surprised.

We too are with N.Wilts , they also wont collect if the bin lid wont close completely flat . We do of course have the cardboard /plastic collection wheelie bin as well , plus we could have a garden waste one , oh and the paper/ glass/tins one ( all collected by different vehicles )

Posts like this make me so thankful that currently my LA 1 Doesn't care how many bags you put out and 2 Still collects weekly.

I'm flabbergasted how many people can't understand how much space nappies take up and less flabbergasted that the council bean counters simply don't "get it" either.

How about parcelling up all the used nappies and send them to the council offices :D

You don't need to buy the nappy wrapping bins. I did have one when my eldest was born, but the refills are a lot more expensive than nappy sacks.

I used to roll the nappy up and pull the tabs around it to secure it shut. Then I'd put it in a nappy bag and squish it as much as I could before tying a tight knot to stop any air getting back in the sack and to keep the smell in! That is a lot more compact and saves a lot of space in the bin.
Here I go again on my own....
  • I know disposables are more convienient, but seeing a line of freshly washed white nappies blowing in the wind is very satisfying!

    P.s. yes, I know I am a bit sad! :)
