any got any recommendations for a trolley jack? Just for occassional DIY use - doesn't need to be top of the range but want it to last. Was going to go with the Torin Big red set on offer at Halfords at the moment:

Torin Big red set

but its not got the best reach - the Halfords own brand set has less in it but a greater reach:

Halfords Kit

Then started looking just for a jack (already have some old axle stands) and lost the will to live. Halfords was a good choice as there is one on the way home and if there is any problem with the jack then I can return it easily. And of course the first link is on offer which I always find hard to ignore :)

That said - let me know you recommendations

Lidl had a good trolley jack for £20 this week and they also had axle stands and other motoring stuff.

Just get whatever is rated to lift your car, axle stands are where the money should be spent.

had a look on their website and have lost the will to live already - do they have them on their website? I could just go in the nearest one but I'd prefer to have some idea of what they have first.

I did look on their website first but it now shows future offers.

Already have a set of quality Sealey folding stands which I've had for years. One of my friend's brother nearly lost most of his fingers when a car came off a jack so you wont find me donig anything on a jack other than swapping a wheel when on the move. Good call though :)

Thanks - would prefer one with a higher lift but for £20 might be worth a look .

Seems to be a very similar spec. to the 2nd Halfords one:

    Features & benefits
    • 2 Tonne Trolley Jack
    • 2 x 1 Ton Axle Stands
    • Padded car creeper
    • Lug wrench adaptors
    • 2 x Steel wheel chocks
    • Lifting range approximately 14 - 38cm (5.5" - 15")
    • Long wheelbase jack 42cm (16.5")

Minor difference in the max height but as long as I can get it up on the stands probably wouldn't matter as I dont expect to spend a lot of time under there.

That Lidl one is pretty much identical to a cheapo I picked up locally about 4 years ago (probably the same item rebranded). It's had considerably more than "occasional DIY" use and has stood up well, except for the front wheel nuts having a habit of undoing themselves - soon sorted with a drop of threadlock.

Where I work on ours also has 4 full-size professional jacks but I find myself reaching for this one 99 times out of 100 because it's light, low, and easy to position. Never had a problem getting anything high enough for stands with it.

they are all junk and unstable once you start going high but are ideal if going to only use once a year
a proper £100 jack would be my choice and if kept indoors would last a man at home 2 lifetimes
