Recommendation for Hotel in New York?

Options
Hi, This is my first post, and I am just wondering if anyone can help me.

My boyfriend and I are going to Dallas to attend my best friend's wedding in mid-May, then we are going to fly to New York for 4 days before we come back to England. I have been searching for hotels in New York City for awhile, been to loads of price comparison sites, find that they are quite pricey for the quality of the hotel.

Therefore I am just wondering if anybody have any good experience in staying hotels in New York!? We are planning on spending around £100 per night max, and it will be best located in Midtown of NYC.

It is appreciated if anybody can give us some advise or share their experience of hotels which they stayed while they are in New York City. Thanks in Advance. :D

There is the red roof inn manhattan, which gets good reviews on https://www.tripadvisor.com

The problem with New York is that demand is high so prices go up.

Have a look at travelzoo.com (US website). Special deals come up all the time and the best thing is that you book with the hotel directly and can cancel with no penalty (unless stated otherwise) if you cancel and find something better that comes up. I have also been looking at venere.com which has the same policy. I am going at the end of month and found a fairly good deal at the Millenium Manhattan, although I would prefer the Renaissance Times Square.

    Thank you Richard and Karen,

Richard, I have had a look at the Red Rood Inn, looks quite nice and the location is ideal... NYC is very expensive. Last time i went I was staying in a hostel cost me £30 for a bed per night... ... and the service isn't even any good (old and dirty)...

Karen, Thanks for your advise, I have had a look at the site, and they do have some decent deals... think might have to compromise with the location for the amount that we are willing to pay...

  • Have a look at trip advisor, click on hotels, and it will list the most popular by people's ratings. In the top 20 there are bound to be some for your budget.

Novotel New York has good reviews, also Doubletree Guest Suites in Times Square.

Also different tabs for best hotels for families, couples, romance etc.

Try Radio City Apartments. We have booked for the end of March. It gets good reviews on TripAdvisor.

Well worth considering New Jersey where hotels are generally much cheaper. If you are near to the Path railway line you can be in Manhattan in a few minutes.

I stayed in Hotel pennsylvania last week for 5 nights, it does not have great reveiws on Trip Advisor, they are a bit mixed - but it was very cheap and the block next to Macys and about 6 blocks from Times Square a fab location and if you get the back of the hotel a great view out of the window on to the Empire State Building.
The hotel was clean, good service but needs modernising.
Well worth it though for the money and location.
Any spelling mistakes are entirely on purpose to check you're paying attention :p

I've just come back from New York and I stayed at the Night hotel. It's a very cool boutique hotel located within 1 minutes walk of times square. Everything about the hotel was quality. The one small drawback was that the rooms were small. I got rates of £80 a night through expedia.

    Other recommendations include:

Radio City apartments - very basic but cheap and well located.

Hyatt on the Hudson - this is in Jersey but it's only 5 minutes via the Path train located outside the hotel. It's actually located on the river and most rooms have a fantastic view of the NY skyline. You can normally get some great deals on this hotel through hotwire or priceline. See https://www.betterbidding.com for more details.

Always check on tripadvisor before booking a hotel. It's normally pretty accurate.

    Hello!

I guess it all depends on when exactly in May you're going (it tends to be cheaper on weekends, funnily enough). When I was travelling in 2005 I stayed in NYC a couple of times, in the midtown area near Times Square etc. These were the places I stayed in, and I checked rough prices around mid-may, in the week:

The Algonquin - I believe that one's just off of fifth avenue, quite centrally located. It's a historic hotel (so it's a bit creaky lol), with a lot of character. It has a strong literary history and the decor is very 1920s-style (the coffee room downstairs has tons of mismatched, gigantic chairs and couches). They even have a rather people-like cat (I forget its name) that's part of the history of the hotel, and they give you a little booklet about the hotel, too. It's around £140 per night-ish at the moment.

The Doubletree Metropolitan Hotel - modern, clean, quiet large rooms (I stayed in a standard double), helpful staff, and they give you a warm melty chocolate chip cookie when you arrive :))) It's pretty close to Grand Central Station, but you can get the subway into Times Square, so it won't take long. In the week it can be as high as £239 but in the weekend it drops to around £147.

I also stayed at Holiday Inn Midtown - kind of your average place, but clean and comfortable. This one's off of 57th street, between 9th and 10th Avenues. According to tripadvisor, the prices are "from $266", but I can't seem to find it on Expedia (where I got the above quotes)

Staying in the Midtown/Grand Central/Times Square area is unfortunately pretty expensive, as it's pretty much the most popular area. I'm a poor student  so it was cleaning me out to stay there in the week, and I had to escape to Woodstock and Sleepy Hollow (both in the state, worth going there though if you like cosy B'n'Bs and you can drive)

But if you're going to stay in New Jersey, please don't stay anywhere near Newark (unless you value your life!).

Sorry it's such a long post lol...have you thought about what you might do in the city when you've got some spare time?
