Just got home and read your responses, thank you so much!!!
the brick wall thats been in front of my eyes for the last 10 years has for the first time, moved a little bit! ha!
Ill no doubt have more questions for you guys over the next days.
One way or another Im getting out of debt!
Thanks again! So much.0 -
Fat Belly.
Yes Im on the electoral role and no I have never checked my credit rating. To be honest Ive never wanted to incase it alerted my creditors, and I wouldnt no where to start!
Also, what do you mean by credit files? Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question!0 -
You are out of debt
The responses that you have had has explained that really well.
I guess now its just a conscience thing? Is it the right thing to pay back these debts even though you do not have to or do you learn from the feeling of dread you have carried around and move on and have a better future? Most people would move on

Experian, Equifax and Callcredit/Noddle. It's all in Martin's article I linked to earlier.
'Credit rating' is a bit misleading. Each lender will interpret the information differently so there's no point paying extra to get a 'score'. The £2 statutory reports from Experian and Equifax will tell you all you need.0 -
so if I was to contact experian etc.. would any of my creditors be alerted to this ?? Ive always been dubious about doing one because of this. Although like you say they are over 6 years old so I should be ok, I still dont want them contacting me regularly like they used to.0

Yes, it's possible.
But you now have something to fire back with (statute barred argument) and this board for support.
And if you're going to move into the mainstream, and apply for a mortgage one day, then you are going to have to make sure your credit files are good and clean.0 -
Right, just to confirm my plan of action is correct. I dont want to !!!! things up now Ive seen that I may be in the clear.
1, Check myself on trust online. Noone will be able to see that Ive made a check on myself?? This is not a credit check? It just shows any CCJ's made against me that I may be unaware of.
2, Do an Experian Report. If my debt from years ago dont show on it, then I can send each of my creditors a letter stating that my debts are statute barred.
If I do an experian report and my debts for some reason still show on it, will this put me in a worse position than I am now, having never contacted anyone for years.
Sorry to bang on, I just want to get this right.
Thanks again to all of you.0 -
Do an Experian Report, Forget the CCJ's for now if you had any they would have found you by now.If I do an experian report and my debts for some reason still show on it, will this put me in a worse position than I am now, having never contacted anyone for years.
Nothing to worry about, If anything shows just get back.0 -
just tried to sign up for experians 30 day free trial and the bleedin thing lost connection in final process. After Id input all my details. Now I have an email from experian saying 'you were nearly there'.
