horrendous data roaming charges

Thats a scandal, Orange and Tmob are getting bad these days, especially as HFH says they tell you to put roaming on so their mast sharing works.

£8 a mb is crazy.
Just imagine if you had downloaded a film. I downloaded a 90minute film yesterday 1.5Gb
so that would have been 1500x8= £12,000 if done abroad

Seriously lucky you only had background data. I think they are dispicable

You must complain to Oftel, they are hopeless but you may get some luck because Tmobile and Orange are heading the complaints lists since their price hikes so they may be keen to avoid anymore!
