Contract start time?

I've given 30 days notice on my current mobile contract at the weekend as I've seen a phone that I want on a decent contract. Now if I order my new phone, it's ready for delivery on 23rd April, which is fine by me but this is a few weeks off the end of my 30 days notice so I might end up paying for two contracts for a few weeks, which I don't really want to do.

So, if I take delivery on 23rd April but don't activate my new phone until May, does my new contract start from May? This seems like there might be an obvious answer but just wanted to check first...and whether I can resist playing with my new phone for weeks is another issue entirely.

I think if you buy a contract the start date is beyond your control. Either pay for two contracts or wait.

Every phone I've had the contract started when the order was processed, I've never had one where the contract had a delayed start.

Why haven't you just asked for your PAC-do you not want to keep the number?

The reply has confused me. I am going to give notice tomorrow on my phone contract and also want to port my number. Surely I should give the notice and ALSO ask for the PAC? If I get a PAC instead of giving notice surely I will have to keep paying my contract for more than another 30 days?

Also I'm a bit confused about my billing period. I previously thought I'd have to give at least 30 days notice to end at the end of a billing period (like rent would work) but looking through the t&c it doesn't mention the billing periods at all, only the 30 days. How will my bills and allowances work if I split up the billing period? Are they both pro-rata?

Normally asking for a PAC implies giving a notice as well with the only difference that if you don't use the PAC within 30 (32?) days the contract goes on.

I thought that giving notice cancels a PAC? A PAC is an option to cancel that expires after 30 days.

I think requesting a PAC cancels the notice, not vice versa, but don't take my word for this.

I tried to say about the same. By requesting a PAC you are giving a notice that expires if you don't port the number.

Hi, I've not asked for my PAC as it's the same network (Orange) - but they can't match the P4U offer. They're sending me a PAYG sim to change the number over to that, then change it over once I get my new phone.

I'd like to keep my number as I've had the same one for years but tbh it's not that much of a big deal if it doesn't work out.
