My original comment:
just opening it without clicking on anything also alerts them too.this only happens if you have 'Show images' enabled by default (also known as 'Fetch images' and 'Download images'),
most things have this disabled by default (I know Gmail and Hotmail on the web do and Live Mail on the desktop also does)
but some email clients will automatically download images without asking for your permission at which point that could alert a spammer your address is real.
if you know that you don't have automatically fetching images turned on then opening an email can't alert a spammer on its own.
ps I just checked on my old hotmail account and holding your mouse over a senders name does show the senders email address without the need to open the email.
Ok thanks. I heard this in a marketing webinar a few years ago, so I've been avoiding it ever since by not opeing them, but my Gmail does have images turned off by default.
So I could have saved myself the effort!
Sorry for the incorrect info.Look at it this way... In a hundred years who's gonna care?0
