Safe to take my Artix (T mobile) abroad without having to worry about data charges?

Im going to eastern europe in a couple of days. I really could do with taking my motorola atrix with me, on my pay monthly T mobile Sim. However, it is likely that I will leave the sim at home, and perhaps the phone al together- im so worried about data roaming charges which I could be hit with. I really could however do with the phone with me, since this will be my first trip solo and it may well be 2weeks+.
I know how to switch of data roaming full stop on the phone-so no charges should be possible. However, Ive still heard about the horror stories of others. And furthermore, T Mobile state data roaming is simply not allowed upon entering another european country, until a purchase of data allowance is made (stating that you will be automatically directed to the purchase option of data in MB-which you can obviously decline)
But then what about background data? e.g. on Apps...is this automatically blocked if my data roaming is not enabled/completely blocked? Anyone have experience of using T Mobile abroad?
Do I have anything to worry about with T mobile or my phone? Much of the horror stories regarding european data roaming charges (though not read all) seem to relate to the I phone. Should my phone be ok?
Or am I best of just taking a PAYG sim with a top up just to absolutely certain?
Im actually not too concerned about the 36p/min phonecall charges (T mobile charges on both PAYG and Pay Monthly) to ring home as well as domestically with europe- a great deal... though an alternative wouldnt be bad.

Might seem like a little thing, but its really stressting me out at the minute. So help appreciated. Thanks

Most of the cases are where people use data overseas without thinking of the cost, as you say you know how to turnn it off you will be fine, or don;t think to turn it off. I've taken my Iphone away with me and had no issues at all.

You MUST ensure you have a PIN lock on the phone and Sim, that way if it's lost or stolen you'll have a lesser risk of the SIM being used to run up international calls. it's not simply the calls home but the calls to other coutries that can cost pounds a minute not pence.

However if it's a holiday why create stress if your worried about it leave it at home.

Switching Data Roaming off has to do the job, but you can switch Mobile Data off as well for peace of mind.
Neither stops you from using WiFi.
