Hi,
Is it worth taking excess insurance for car hire?
What can I expect to pay for six days hire?
Thanks for any suggestions.

It is for the UK.
The excess seems to vary between £600/£800
Don't think I have ever seen hire cars without excess!

It's a gamble like any insurance.
However, you can get an annual policy from https://www.insurance4carhire.com
I believe you can get cashback via the usual channels. They are UK based and registered and are spoken highly of on here.0 -
They also do short term cover by the day. They used to have a rule that the hire had to be 150 miles away from your home but not sure if they've dropped that, can't see it from a quick glance. It's a gamble like any insurance.

We used "insurance4carhire" for car hire in South Africa & had no problems claiming for a replacement tyre - we just paid up front for the tyre and submitted a claim on our return to the UK.0

I have booked the hire car through Hertz/Ryanair but I could not find how much they charge for this extra.
I have used insurance4carhire before but I was amazed how the price had almost doubled in since I last used them (approx 1 yr)
I suppose still cheaper than paying hundreds!!

Hi Carmen,
To answer your original question, seems like you have a few choices here.
iCarhireinsurance.com
carhireexcess.com
insurance4carhire.com
questor-insurance.co.uk
car-hire-excess.com
worldwideinsure.com
They all have reputable insurers behind them, and they are all FSA regulated in their own right. Yes, they all might have long list of companies in between, but that seems to be the case with many products where there is a broker involved. Where it is underwritten does not make a difference. All you need to make sure is that you have access to the Ombudsman if there is an issue. Underwriters who operate in the UK are all members of the Ombudsman, thus providing comfort if something goes really wrong.
I would say, take your time, review the prices and cover which meets your requirements. That is the best thing a customer can do these days. Advice from these types of forums is quite tricky as you have to swim through the various fluff people like to post.MasterChief0
