Whats the worst thing about being unemployed to you?

  • Being labelled workshy by the media, being forced to go onto the work programme which is a grotesque parody of what an employment programme should actually be. Lots of depression, lots of feelings of worthlessness etc

The more I look at this thread the more I'm beginning to feel the worse is the assumptions by people that those claiming are sponging. Most aren't, most aren't sponging when they apply for any benefit. But there's this small few who ruin it for everyone else.

Neither short term nor long term claimants wants to be bundled in with these people, and rightly so! Job seeking is not easy. The old adage is correct, its easier to find work when you're in work. I always thought it was rubbish too!

Yes we had a thread on this once, I think it boiled down to the fact most jobs go via networking/word of mouth and when your unemployed you are effectively cut off, I think it had very little to do with the fact of having a job as such.

Most jobs do not go via netowrking at all. They go to the people who apply and if you are going via an agency they are only concerened in getting their payment from the employer and if direct with a company you have to be lucky that they will actually read your CV and they probably wont. Had one part time job get back to me today after I chased them saying thanks for the follow up email but they had 220 applications and are working their way through them and say I have a good CV for the role but will get back to me once they have a short list.
Do I have any faith in the fact they will get back in touch? No!

To answer the question here however the worse thing about having no job is losing the life you once had. I do not go out, do not meet up with friends, can not do anything as I have no £ to do so. All I do 9-5 is look for a job and just spent 2 hours this morning filling in an applcation form for a 3 mth job! IF you are working you have no time to do all this and looking for a job is a full time job!

I think you'll find advertising a job is actually a last resort, yes when a job is advertised it will go to someone who applies, but the majority of jobs don't even get to the advertised stage, they go internally, or via word of mouth.

Sorry but that is RUBBISH!! All companies advertise or go to agencies. Sorry but they do. If you think that nearly all jobs go via word of mouth I do not know what world you live in.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one, I can only go via my own experience, When we got made redundant, the secretaries all got jobs within a week at other companies because of contacts, those of us still struggling to find work are those with little to no contacts. I appreciate this may depend on exactly what kind of job/company your after, If your a grad then yes probably all jobs do get advertised, I mean I see enough of them advertised, but basic low paid work no not all jobs do get advertised, why pay to advertise when you can get Joe Bloggs son or mate who needs a job.

    and so on

why PAY for an advert when you say they can ALL get Joe Bloggs' son in to do the job!

You really need to wake up - there are LOADS of jobs advertised every day!

Answer the question. Why are all these companies PAYING for adverts if the jobs have gone to people they know? I am sure that's a good use of money eh!
