in Water bills
I am looking to buy a water saving widget for my shower and a couple of the water saving devices that you place in your cistern.
Could someone please recommend a manufacturer and a place to buy them please? I live in Dubai so they will need to be posted internationally.
I have asked for these in various hardware stores and even contacted the water supplier and they had never heard of such devices. Pretty strange considering the lack of water in this region

The water saving widget that I use in my cistern is called a stone but you could use anything that reduces the volume of water required to fill the cistern.
You could use the waste from your shower to flush your loo and that would be a huge saving, I have also heard of people that divert the waste from their washing machine into a tank to be used to flush the toilet.0 -
What sort of shower?
Most water is Dubai is desalinated, so no shortage, it just burns a lot of oil to produce it.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Thanks for the replies. I like the idea of recycling the shower water but I`m in rented property and doubt I would get approval from any changes to the water system.
The shower is electric - is that what you mean when you ask the type?
The charges for water are very high so we`re very concious of the amount that we are using. From an environmental point of view, we do get reminded of water shortages as this recent article confirms. http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/un-warns-of-water-shortage:money:0 -
Th aerators (if that's what you are thinking of) are not designed for electric showers. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

As already said, a brick in the cistern will reduce the amount of water each flush uses.
As for the shower, most electric showers have a "temperature" control, which actually adjusts the flow rate as less water going through the heating unit will get hotter. So, a hotter shower will use less water.
But remembering back to my days living in the Middle East, we used to have a cold shower in the warmer weather, as the cold water was warm enough to comfortably shower under.
Those were the days when drinking water cost more per litre than petrol. Well, I'd recommend this device: www.interflush.co.uk* but if you are in rented accom then the Landlord might not let you fit one. Worth asking, though.
Most water companied will send you a free 'water displacement' product for your cistern, if you ask them nicely. Usually it's either a 'Hippo bag' or a 'Flush saver'. Maybe get a UK friend to order one for you and post it on. It shouldn't cost much to post.
You drop either into your cistern and you can remove it when you leave, to save upsetting the landlord.
(*I have no connection with the product, just bought one and think it's rather cool)0 -
Have less showers, dont flush until every other pee, get a water butt and a bucket in the bathroom and fill it when you have a shower (for flushing).
Drink petrol instead.0 -
