Barmaids aren't the brightest. I've had them tell me that drinking beer through a straw increases the alcohol content, and that mixing lager and cider creates a drink in which the alcohol is greater than the sum of its parts. I wish this were true as it would have been an excellent MSE drinking tip that could have saved me a fortune over the years!

Firstly, so one/two barmaids gave you the wrong information they are all thick ??

secondly, they are both common myths about alcohol (although you/they have them muddled or I do :p), drinking through a straw is said to get you drunk faster as you drink it more quickly than you would without a straw, and mixing cider/lager (or snakebite as its known) used to be banned in many pubs as there was a large difference in the alcohol content between the two and drinking them together made a stronger alcohol content than many could handle in one drink.

just sounds like an overzealous and undertrained bar maid to me, doesn't make much sense how she allowed him to drink in the pub but not buy it himself! good thing the fuzz didn't turn up - they probably would have embarrased her with a dressing down!
