Dog breeder/vet advice please!!!

Hi,

I'll keep this as non-graphic as possible, I can't get hold of my vet due to it being Easter Sunday, would appreciate some advice!!

I have a 3 year old castrated male dog and an 8 month old female. The female has come into season and is 16 days into it. Today my male has been showing an interest in her and just a moment ago, I heard the male crying and dragging the female across the floor, he was locked to her. I didn't think this was possible if you'd neutered the male?? Anyway, me must have panicked when he couldn't get free and thats why he ran. The two of them are now separated and my male is bleeding in that region, not heavily but enough for me to worry. I don't know what to do!! Please help!

  • How long ago was the male neutered? If recently, then he could still father pups but if over 6 months you *should* be OK.

Are you a member of Dogs Tr*ust? They have a vet advice line or
What about your insurance company - do they have a vet advice line?

Sorry but I really think you need to speak to a qualified veterinary professional if the male is bleeding down there - he may have damaged himself if he came out of the locked position in an unnatural way.

Your vets must have an out of hours number on their answerphone?

I agree with RFTA you need to speak to a vet about this, if your vet doesn't have contact details for emergencies in your area try googling it, usually only one practice in the area does out of hours work and everything gets directed to them.

I hope your boy is ok

Thanks both, I managed to get hold of the out of hours emergency team. They've said to keep an eye on him (the bleeding has eased up) and take him in if he has problems urinating. She said neutered dogs don't normally do that, but there are the odd instances where it happens :D typical!

It's likely/possible that he has just burst a small blood vessel on his peni$ - this can happen during a normal mating and usually looks more dramatic than it actually is. It happened to one of my stud dogs when he was getting tested and the vet was only 'stimulating him manually' if you know what I mean :o:o. Frightened me half to death!!!

Looking at the time you posted I would suspect it has stopped by now??

Depending on when he was castrated it is unlikely that the female will get pregnant - but they will mate again given half a chance so you need to keep them separated at all times.

In the event of them mating and tying again you need to hold them quietly to prevent them dragging each other around.

    Hope this helps :D.

Hmmm! It is far more common than the vets would have you believe ;).

Sorry, I should have said - he was castrated over 2 years ago. Bleeding has pretty much stopped now thankfully. They are being kept apart now, I literally had no idea that was a possibility otherwise i'd have kept a closer eye on them. You live and learn!! ;) Thanks for your help!

Yup ..... although castrating takes away the ability to father pups and, for most dogs will take away the wandering/howling to get to b*t*c*s in season (although for dogs castrated later in life or once they've already errr had experience it may not stop these) - many dogs will find being beside a b*t*h in season hard to resist and it does happen.

Glad to hear it's stopped & that you've spoken to your vets. Fingers crossed he's absolutely fine.

They are both doing great today. Both urinating without difficulty, but Bailey is taking the 'once bitten twice shy' approach when Lola is 'swishing' at him now ;)

Before last nights incident we took the decision to de-crate Lola so packed it all up and into storage it went, thinking we would put Lola's new basket in the spare room in place of the crate. Bailey sleeps in a basket in that room.
So after last nights drama we decided to put her basket in our room to keep them apart and she did great for her first night out of the crate. She jumped up on our bed only once, and when told to go back to bed she did I can't wait for her season to finish so we can return to normality!! Thanks to everyone who replied last night xxx

It is also a good idea to get Lola neutered (if you are on a low income you may be able to get financial help from the Dogs Trust, the PDSA and the Blue Cross - but ask for help before this is done). Do you want to breed from her? With so many dogs needing homes, I would hope the answer is no. When she has her next season? Do you want un-neutered males fighting outside? (Apparently, a male dog can scent a female on heat upto 10 miles away - or something ridiculous like that). I remember a case of a Rhodesian Ridgeback attacking and injuring other male dogs ( I had to save the life of one, since he had this small dog around the throat), when a neighbour's dog was in season. Also, when your dog is in season, she cannot be walked anywhere without the risk of her being jumped on by another male dog and made pregnant, or a massive dog fight breaking out. (I know this sounds like most towns and cities in England at a weekend when, after a few beers the human males want a female to mate with!) I am not judging, I am sugggesting - your choice and good luck.
