    if im correct 47inches = around 120cm?
if so most island recirculating extractors are around a min of 750cm in height and require around 650/700 ish cms above.
Also you dont have as much play with a recirculating one in cutting down due to where the vent is and manufacturer guidelines.
we had a limited selection of choice getting one for us with a norm height ceiling(2400) due to this and recirculating.

an option could be..... is duct the extractor and have the extractor pipe boxed in running along the side of the steel beam, could then box the other side of the extractor along the beam to make it look more part of the room (ment to be there)
A little more work involved with the boxing but when ducting you can cut down the extractor more, as you will need to do this to have one with your height.

Do you have to have the island as a cooking station? If you use it as workspace and have the hob against a wall it would solve your hood problems and also aleviate the need for getting electicity/gas to the centre of the room, making your new kitchen cheaper still and leaving more for a fancy extractor :D.

    Just an idea.

Hi Evokit - thank you so much - that sounds like the solution. I'll talk to my builder and see if he thinks he can do it. Thanks again.

Hi Peachy - already in situ I'm afraid but I think going with what Evokit suggested is the solution for me.

Thanks to everyone for posting - you are the best!

    Regards
