Alternative to island cooker hood

Hi everyone - need your help please. I'm doing up my kitchen and want to install an island unit. Unfortunately, where I want to site it is underneath a steel beam (which was put there when a wall was taken down). Obviously I can't attach an island chimney extractor to the steel beam and if I put it either side of the beam it's not going to be above the cooker. I need either a really slim island hood or another source of extraction. Oh and I don't have a lot of money to spend on it. I've seem some at over a £1000! Can anyone help and advise me of a possible solution please?

Thanks in advance.
Regards
Ana

You might want to consider a recirculating extractor hood these do not need any space in the roof. http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?client=safari&rls=en&q=island+cooker+extractor+hoods&oe=UTF-8&red

You might want to fit a ceiling mounted extractor within a box on the roof.

You might want one of these> thumbnail_star-additional-2.jpghttp://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?client=safari&rls=en&q=island+cooker+extractor+hoods&oe=UTF-8&re

    Thanks

its the elica star - looking around £2200 for that one - !!!!!! to clean i expect haha.
They do cheaper ones but start over £1000 - cda do a latern under £1000, about £850 - 900 but all sill costings

Look on Elica site, but most are over £1000 and the rest, downdrafts could be more cost effective but again there around the £1100 + mark.
How wide is your beam? and how high is your ceiling?
most island, ceiling hung extractors need supporting between the joists and attached to that. so some ceiling cutting and mending will be needed.

Thanks Evokit - unfortunately where the joists are would make the chimney hood sit out over the side of the oven and my ceiling isn't very high. Guess I'm going to have to start doing the lottery (or keep opening window when cooking!).

If I had thought I would done without an island but you know how it is when you get an idea in your head...doh!!!

    Thanks again.

were you looking to duct the hoob or re circulate?
  • There are solutions, but they will all cost well in excess of £1000 and may require substantial building work.

Cheapest we found for the electra star was £1779. See here> http://www.kitchenscience.co.uk/cooking/hoods_and_splashbacks/island_hoods/elica_star47.html

I don't understand why you cannot fit a recirculating extractor hood below this steel beam? If you post a photo of your roof, I feel sure someone will be able to solve your problem.

We have just fitted a NEFF extractor in the ceiling above our island. The fitter wanted to build a box to fit onto the ceiling. He said it would be much easier than cutting a hole in the ceiling <LOL> That might be a solution for you?

Hi - I suppose I just presumed that because it was a steel beam that nothing could be fitted there, including recirculating extractors? Not techie enough yet to do a photo. Is that not the case and can things be attached to it? If so, I think you've solved my problem though the space between the steel beam and my hob is roughly 47inches - would that be big enough?

Thanks - you're giving me hope!!!
