gunsandbankos- is it expensive to be on slimming world?
No, I went to one class, got the books I needed and it cost me £10. I dont go to weekly classes though some on the thread do. I just follow the books and the thread on here.
Food can be as cheap or expensive as you like, I follow the green plan which is mostly vegetarian, I eat lots of homemade soup, omelette, pasta etc.The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0 -
Hi,
I'm not dieting per-se, but I am following the James Duigan 'Clean and Lean' method. I have never dieted before, to lose weight in the past I have done so through alot of exercise, which for me isn't sustainable because I'm fundamentally a bit lazy and hate sport!
The basics of the concepts are that toxins are evil, and are what cling to fat in your body (not your body itself). Toxins are found in most things in varying degrees, but you can minimise them by doing a few things:
* Cut out sugar (sugar turns to bodyfat faster than fat does!) including foods where one of the top 3 ingredients is sugar, and anything ending in ..ose.
* Cut out processed foods (foods that contain more than 5 ingredients, and / or you don't know what the ingredients actually are)
* Minimise alcohol and caffeine.
Lots of toxins are in all of our food, and James recomments going organic to reduce your intake. I can't do that, it's too expensive, but I make sure I wash everything thoroughly before eating it.
Each meal should consist of a palm-sized amount of protein (usually chicken, turkey or fish for me, but I have red meat once or twice a week), some good fats, and carbohydrate in the form of vegetables (i have alot of spinach, sweet potatoes, green beans, carrots etc.)
Because I have also decided to embrace my apparent wheat intolerance at the same time, this is easy for me. I don't have bread (apart from very occasional rye / flax bread), pasta, white rice, white potatoes. When I have a meal that would usually command one of these, I replace with sweet potato, quinoa, brown rice.
I also don't have bog standard chocolate, I have 85% cocoa stuff and a square of that satisfies a whole evenings worth of craving. If you're not convinced, try 74% first, then go up to 85%, when I then dropped back to 74% i realised it was too sweet and now stick with the higher content stuff
I only drink one coffee in the morning, and then green / peppermint teas or hot or cold water with a slice of lemon or lime for flavour. I don't drink squash or juices anymore and no coke.
I avoid anything that is branded as low fat - usually if it is reduced fat, its often increased sugar, or even worse, fake sugar and sweeteners which are heavy in toxins. Plus, there is nothing wrong with fat, as long as it is the right sort of fat. I cook in coconut oil, and drizzle olive oil - olive oil turns to a bad fat when it is heated.
I also eat alot less fruit than before. Fruit contains sugar too, so I avoid having too much. Most of my 5-a-day are vegetables.
If you're interested, do a search for James Duigan Clean and Lean, I can recommend the books for more detail than I can provide in this message. I have lost 13lb in 3 months, having done no real exercise, and with a few weeks of plateau. I don't crave anything, I don't have sugar crashes, I don't miss anything, and I still allow myself to have the MIL's sunday roast every week!!0 -
I'd been cutting out lots of carbs . No bread, pots , rice , pasta . No bananas + 1 piece of fruit daily. One protein day weekly . Based on the Dukan diet . 2 weeks ago we went to Center Parcs where I ate a bit too much . That was ok as we were on hols . Had some acid reflux + this has continued up till now + is quite painful at times . I really think it's because I've continued to eat chocolate, bread , hot x buns etc+ it's not agreeing with me at all. Healthy eating from today .0

I really think that because I now know I have a medical reason (albeit unqualified) to quit the wheat, it has been easier for me. It's now a complete no-brainer - I no longer wake up in the morning feeling bloated, no more grotty stomach, or lethargy - knowing that the wheat made me feel like that means that I have very little desire for bread, and I was a proper toast-monster before. I cave in occasionally, but stick to a small amount, and make sure I remind myself the next morning why I feel like crap!
Maybe you can condition yourself to associate the acid-reflux to particular foods and make it easier to avoid!!0 -

Yes, I'm hoping that will work now that I think it is the problem . For the past 9 months I've had bread etc occasionally but had lost any craving .Since 2 weeks ago I've eaten chips, pizza , scampi . All the wrong things really . I'm a bit disappointed with myself now . My abdomen is bloated , gained 3lbs + don't feel good about myself either . Been very good today + going to continue now.:D0 -
I'm not on a diet to lose weight, but trying something new to get my ibs under control. I've cut out all dairy (unless lactose free), wheat, gluten, spicy and fizzy stuff. Yes, it's boring, but I do feel better for it, as I'm eating healthier food. I normally cook from scratch anyway, so I just have to think before I cook.
I'm trying this for a month initially, and will add each type of food from the "banned" list slowly, to see if I'm intolerant to anything else apart from lactose (have known about that one for years). If it makes my tummy worse, I'll cut it out again.
Incidentally, I think I've lost weight, although I don't know for sure, as I don't weigh myself. I have lost 2 inches from my waist though, which I'm not sure if it's weight or just no bloating. And the (ahem) dimples that used to hang out on various body parts are vanishing at a rate of knots
I've been doing this regime for 2 weeks now.
I'm not going hungry, as I'm eating lots still. I don't think I'll ever like rice cakes but needs must. What I really miss at the moment is the spicy part of food, but hopefully it won't be too long before I can change that. Also, I'm having no caffeine. Shock horror, I hear you say, but I'm sleeping like a baby

i dont want to cut anything out of my diet completely, as i'd hate to not be able to go out for a meal etc with friends!
What exercise do you all do as well?0 -
Exercise: Walking and Pilates. I have a fairly physical job where I'm rarely sitting down, so am pretty active at work as well

In regards to cutting things out completely food-wise, I'm only doing it out of necessity. I don't get out much anyway
, but without bringing the ibs under control, I can't go out for a meal anyway, as quite often would be "grounded" in the littlest room in the house

I don't do any proper. exercise at the moment and i'm under physio supervision. I'm only doing leg strengthening and flexibility stuff. Nothing aerobic, its all lying or sitting.i dont want to cut anything out of my diet completely, as i'd hate to not be able to go out for a meal etc with friends!

How often do you go out to eat? I easily fit it in.
Steak or chicken with salads, fruit based desserts and veg/protein based starters mean I don't miss out. Even if there is nothing there suitable I just have a smaller portion of a 'disallowed' food.
Allowing yourself to eat something because there is no other option shouldn't make you feel bad or a failure, you just need to get yourself back on track the next meal.
My husbands got me an Easter egg. I'll eat it, but if I'm good the rest of the time it won't matter too much. If I think I can't eat it it will torture me, then ill scoff it and feel bad. Then I'll think, being as I've cheated, I might as well eat x, y and z too.0 -
I bought a weight loss - HYPNOSIS app (Darren Marks) for my Android phone, it has been excellent for me. Just 20 mins once or twice a week and it is very relaxing too. I've lost 5 lbs in a couple of weeks I walk more too.:hello:0
