Ikea Abstrakt kitchen - alternative white gloss plinth?

  • Burnsguitarman - we're laying the floor to just under the plinths so we can't do that - but that's a good look - apart from all the dust bunnies that would gather underneath the units due to my slovenliness...

faerie~spangles- I didn't think about cleaning (hmmm!) - the appliances are brushed steel but as the worktop and floor are oak I don't think that having ss plinths would work.

I think we'll go the Majjie and Steve the fitter route. We'll get the Ikea one and if we're not happy we'll get high gloss plinth from somewhere else.

I quite like the look of steel effect plinths with oak. Here's one (design that is - not kitchen!) I made earlier:

  • you will find that in most places the plinth is not a high gloss more a matt finish benchmarx kitchens are the same doors are white high gloss plinth is of a matt white, you can not notice 1 bit.... as most people will not look to the ground there head will be straight at wall unit height so keep save and go white plinth :-)
  • Thank you Majjie, that is so thoughtful. I think you are right about the the stainless steel plinths. I couldn't imagine it so I've been trawling the internet looking for kitchen photos with the oak, white gloss and stainless steel plinths and they do look good together. Our appliances are brushed steel so hopefully it will bring the scheme together.

It's funny to think that we had decided on the kitchen 4 months ago and now within 48hrs of ordering we've change our minds! As long as we don't change our minds 2 days after the kitchen is in....

Once the kitchen is in I'll post some photos. Thanks again x

PS that design is spookily similar to what we've chosen!

Well, it is a design for an IKEA kitchen! Craig's right too, though, I don't think you'd really notice that the white plinth wasn't high gloss.

  • Majjie, as you are very knowledgeable about kitchens I wonder if you can give me your opinion on the following:

We are planning a breakfast bar consisting of 3 x 60xcm units (instead of a corner unit and a 60cm unit) with a 25cm bar overhang. To get the overhang we need to cut the depth of the units to 54cm

Would it be okay aesthetically if the one forming the corner opens out under the breakfast bar overhang? We'll use a discreet handle so hopefully it will blend in with the back panel.

The other two will be 3 drawer units which will be cut down to 54cm. Does all this sound okay? I'm having last minute wobbles :o

We will have drop down mitred edge worktop on the island to disguise the cutdown units.

Thanks if you can help and no worries if you can't!

Reggie - that would all be fine.
we have our washing machine in the corner under the breakfast bar instead of a corner unit and works fine.
Just make sure its brought forward inline with the back panel unlike your 3d image.
we also have the worktop mitre wrap round but in silestone and again works great and looks even better

Yes, that arrangement would be fine Reggie, with the back of the units lined up with the front of the corner one - as Evokit says. You'll need an L-shaped filler in the corner, on the kitchen side, in any case, to clear the handles.

The only thing that worries me is cutting down the drawer units. I take it you've checked that you can do that? In a normal UK unit it wouldn't be a problem but, of course, IKEA units have no recess at the back. I take it 54cm allows the drawer boxes to fit in?

If you can't - you'll have to use their 370mm deep drawer units (which would lose you quite a bit of drawer space) or you'd have to juggle the units under the window and move those drawers in a bit ... or you'd have to reduce your overhang to 20cm.

If budget permits, I'd add two 600 doors as back panels to the drawer units ... will look as if you have a smart panelled back then (except one of them will be an opening door). With the drop down worktop at the end, it'll look really smart. :D

Re the plinths..... we have the ABSTRAKT kitchen in gloss white, with the stainless effect plinths and it's a lovely contrast. As others have said, white plints would show every mark.
