Wireless connection problem.

Hi, i hope you can help, i have trawled through the other threads with no joy.

I have a speedtouch router and up till a few days ago had no problems connecting wirelesslessly to the internet from my laptop.
I decided to connect another computer to the router directly (an old PC running Windows 98) which now connects without a problem but ever since i did this my laptop can no longer connect.
If i look at wireless connections it says i am connected to the network but i cannot get an internet connection.
I am now getting a messga esaying that the page i am trying to connect to is not available offline and asks me which service to use to connect, the only option in the drop down menu is '3G Prefered connection' which does not sound right to me.
WHOOOOSHHHHHHHHH……..
Blimey what was that ?

Oh I wasn’t quite ready can I have another go ?
Sorry mate only one per person.

Does the laptop connect ok if the other pc is disconnected? if so then it could be an IP address conflict which may be fixed by restarting the router and both computers. If not sorted then you need to access the control settings of your router. You can check IP addresses by entering "ipconfig" in the Command prompt, each computer should have it's own (should be in this format 192.168... etc )

Can you connect the laptop using a LAN cable at the same time as the PC and obtain an internet connection on both?

Try to re-enter the wireless encryption key into your laptop.

    .
  • The laptop will not connect wirelessly whether the other PC is connected or not. Their is only 1 LAN port on the router and i have just connected this to the laptop and its connected to the Internet without a problem.
My main problem when following the suggested solutions elsewhere is looking at settings on the old PC running windows 98 as the internet / network link in control panel bears no resemblance to the one on Windows XP so im struggling.

Have you tried the suggested restart of all devices?
What is the model # of your router? It sounds as if it' may have lost its settings or needs to be configured for the additional PC..

  • Thanks yes tried the restart many times. It is a Speedtouch 576 v6 Router.
I cant even find how to open the Speedtouch settings on my laptop or pc.

To access the configuration pages, enter http://192.168.1.254 into your browser. More info will be found in the manual probably on the CD that came with it or download one from the manufacturers site.

I reckon it would be best if you go through the installation setup supplied on the CD, that is your safest option.

I've got a belkin G plus MIMO router which has been working fine for 3 months then all of a sudden it's showing limited or no connectivity. internet connection still works with the cable no problem but not wireless rang belkin who were coming up with excuse after excuse and different explanation each time. Can any one help. I can't reset my computer as i have lost the installation CD that came with latop originally. Can I get another from HP
  • limited or no connectivity invariably means that the encryption type/key doesn't match, and can be fixed by connecting to the router to and copying the key, then paste it into the PC wireless settings.

If that doesn't work, try changing channels on the router.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Also, When looking at the config pages of the routers, look out for the MAC address.
Should be in a format like - 00:11:g6:34:cf:dd
If they are all zero, there is a problem with the wireless module.

Sometimes a hard reset will correct the issue, but experience has proved that a replacement one is required.

And also, check that the DHCP range is 2 or more. If it is set to one, only one machine will be able to connect properly to the wireless router.

    Just an idea..

From the Speedtouch 576 spec published on http://www.speedtouchdsl.com/prod576.htm I note that it's equipped with the following:-

"Wireless client registration/access control (with physical push button)"

Maybe you can check that this switch is in the right position.
