From what I've read it causes a problem with the Lambda sensor. This monitors the exhaust gas and allows the fuelling to be adjusted by the engine managment system.

I did have a laugh at this tosh in the Daily Hate Mail where everyone refers to "oxygen filters"!

#19, the tests normally carried out on fuel for containats does not check for silicon. It is silicon from a processing machine that has caused the problem. The routine tests for contaminants looks for excess water, ethanol.and such. Apparently this is the first time such a problem has occurred during manufacture.

I know Sainsbury's has not been involved (they use different supplier) though Morrisons have. However I was looking at Sainsbury's website on a different matter this afternoon and noticed on their site:

"What happens if I have a problem with my car after filling up at a Sainsbury’s petrol station?
"We take the issue of contaminated fuel very seriously and have procedures in place to support genuine complaints."

How useful is that? I really know what to do if I've a problem, don't I? (There's no feedback possible via their website, BTW - for which I was going to the site originally.)
