Ronseal fence paint has washed off in the rain

  • Now you tell me where on the tins or on the website that it says that.
There will be many unsuitable surfaces, not sure they can list every one . . .
  • I'm using old fashioned Creasote, mixed with old engine oil, applied with an industrial spray gun. Not environimentally freindly but quick and smelly and will last forever.

We have the same problem. Took my wife and I well over 2 weekends to paint a new fence about a month ago. Rained yesterday and washed Ronseal Onecoat Fencelife off. No complaints with speed of Ronseal response, BUT, the guy said that it was due to the tanalising treatment of the fence, and we should have waited for 6 months.

Now you tell me where on the tins or on the website that it says that. If we had known it, we would not have wasted £60 and days of boring work.

    I am b****y furious.

    APPLICATION PROCEDURE
    Condition of Substrate before Treatment

Ronseal One Coat Fencelife can be used on all untreated, sawn timber and timber previously treated with other fence and shed treatments including creosote. Allow creosote treated surfaces to weather for at least six months before treatment with Ronseal One Coat Fencelife.

Timber treated with wood preservatives applied by vacuum/pressure techniques should be allowed to “age” for at least one month before application of Ronseal One Coat Fencelife.

When was the treatment done? Was this a new fence? (How would Ronseal know about the treatment of your fence or when it was done?)

If they were meaning you have to keep the fence dry for 6 months after using Ronseal, then they're talking utter bullocks and the product is not fit for purpose.

Any of these paints with high amounts of vinyl/acrylic just come off really easily. If the wood is damp when painted it 'blows' (blisters) and flakes off.

I use Farrow and Ball Estate Emulsion which is low vinyl and sinks into the wood. Sounds expensive but it's been up eight years now without being re-done.

I've used Wickes stuff too but that only lasted two years.
  • They obviously haven't solved the problem, just spent all weekend painting the shed. It washed off 24 hours after I applied the 3rd coat (one coat forest green). Absolutely fuming....

OP your cats are GORGEOUS!! x
  • Just purchased Ronseal one coat fence Tudor Black from a DIY store. 2 coats and it just vanished, 3rd coat is getting there. It does say for previously treated wood which is what it is. I was going over a dark colour as it states too. Rang DIY store (having painted the gate) and they are happy to refund me. Thank you to them, but never using 'one coat' again! Rubbish product.
