The way to foil these scanners is to carry 2 of these cards together, appearently the scanners are unable to recognise the signals when two or more cards are being carried by the user. As I have a contactless credit and debit card in my wallet I should be OK. But yes you're right, it's a risk.0

It is not just outside ATM's, my hubby was in spain a few years ago and withdrew cash from an inside ATM and it was cloned.
Thankfully his bank were on the ball and by the time he got back I had already had calls for him to call his bank.

As only a handful of countries use chip and pin we would alienate a lot of tourists who rely on being able to get cash from ATMs or pay for goods via terminals in shops.
All Visa and Mastercard cards have a number on the mag stripe saying that they should be authenticated with the chip (if possible) if they contain one. The ATM has to contact the bank anyway to authorise the funds, it can also ask if a chip should be present on the card. I find it rather shocking that ATM's don't make use of the chip.0 -
Scientists are warning thieves could use thermal imaging cameras to capture a person's credit card pin number or door entry code.

Banks were yesterday accused of a cover-up after they tried to silence a Cambridge University scientist who exposed a fatal flaw in chip and PIN card security.
The UK Cards Association, which represents the country’s biggest banks, objected to research that showed how a simple £20 device could be used by fraudsters to buy goods without entering a valid personal identification number at the till.

The trouble is that you may have a fight on your hands convincing your bank that it wasn't you that entered your pin!!!
We will end up being scared of our ruddy shadow !!!

Watched this programme with OH and was left wondering why banks have not thought of introducing ATM's with the card slot completely transparent, so at all times you can see your card. Its not impossible or expensive in re-design, it would render it pretty impossible to add skimming devices without them standing out like a sore thumb.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

I think the banks don't want to or for some reason are reluctant to spend money on ATM security. They'd rather the crooks get away with it than protect the innocent public from ATM fraud.
Yes they have to refund someone but how do you even attempt to prove you did not give your card and pin to someone else, or claim it's missuse and draw the money out yourself and keep it. It's neigh on impossible. I really don't like outside ATM's at all, prefer to use counter or at least inside ATM. Only in emergencies would I use a outside ATM.
I've seen them where it's obvious someone has put something over the card entry slot, you can see the residue of where it was pulled off around the card slot on Barclays Bank on Coventry Road Small Heath, but doubt they'd want to know and should already be aware of it and have done NOTHING.0 -
I've got a good way to fix it MoneySaverLog, force all ATM's in the UK to have chip capabilities any ATM operator that fails to include the facility takes the full burden for all claimed fraud. Exactly like the chip & pin switch with merchants.0
