Just watching this at the moment. This is why I don't like ATMs, especially outside ones.

Fascinating isn't it - an ATM near us had an A4 amateur-printed notice on it recently saying it was faulty - an electrical wire was clearly visible coming out of it and into the wall below - yet folk were still using it! It was like it for weeks. Then in the local paper it said that transactions at that ATM were linked to losses traced to SAmerica!
You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow

I've noticed one that looks like something has been stuck to where the card is entered, the glue still on there from where it was ripped off at a Barclays machine on the Coventry Road in Small Heath the other day.

Now I know that machine must have been a target at some point.

In regards to the card cloning to withdraw money, I wonder why the ATM doesn't make use of the chip presented on cards. The magnetic stripe even tells the ATM it should have a chip and the bank can also "tell" the ATM the same thing, why not just swallow the card if it isn't present or at least refuse to dispense money?

I only ever use an outside ATM, unless it's absolutely necessary, as I am fortunate enough to be able to use a bank within business hours and I can withdraw cash just by presenting my card to the cashier. However, I have to say that the sentences imposed for these fraudsters does not fit the crime, as they could be out of prison within a year and start again. Maybe they should be deported after release, but I suppose that would infringe their human rights:mad:

What about our rights to be able to access our own money safely and without having to worry about these criminals!

I know it's no consolation if you are affected by this type of fraud, but you will always be refunded in full and any charges also refunded.

At least the programme highlighted what to look for on an ATM.

The whole design of ATM machines makes it hard to detect when extra stuff has been stuck to the fascia. Surely the companies who make these could make the whole faceplate out of one single molding ?. By using PET plastic it would be impossible to stick anything to it (try sticking something to a fizzy drink bottle).
Using a one-piece fascia with standard sized holes for keypad, screen, card reader and cash-drawer, there would be no edges so if any scammer tried to fix a skimmer device or cash-trap, it would stick-out like a sore thumb.

All of the fraud discovered in that programme was down to cloning of the magnetic strip.
There was no breach of chip and pin.

Pressure should be bought on the banks to make sure all ATM'S work by chip and pin only.
As long as you keep a hand over the pinpad then a covert camera could not catch the PIN number.

People are quick to blame the banks but there is a lot we can do ourslelves to help.

I'm horrified at the amount of people who blatanly just punch their pin number in regardless, !!!!!!, all you have to do is cover what youre doing with your other hand or your wallet or purse. Same in supermarkets, people are just being so stupid.

A month ago, lady in front of me at the supermarket, just about to punch her number in, she forgot what it was, had to think about it and the suddenly remembered it, unbelievably she spoke it out loud as she punched it in. Me and the cashier were just dumbfounded.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Your absolutely correct on cloning magstrips but as I've said before you can get an exact duplicate Chipped Card (I had the very same).

There was a breach of Chip & PIN, well the PIN part at least. What's more, there are lots, and lots, and lots of ways of acquiring someones PIN.

I would still advise those who never use their credit card to withdraw cash, or who feel unsafe using a PIN to opt for Chip & Signature (C&S) Cards:

    Just think.

Crooks could never access an ATM - no pin.

When you use a C&S card a point of sale. The Chip is verified and a transaction slip produced for you to sign.

As only a handful of countries use chip and pin we would alienate a lot of tourists who rely on being able to get cash from ATMs or pay for goods via terminals in shops.

The new threat comes from people armed with Android-powered mobile phones fitted with near-field identity chips. These can be used to scan all the details required to make a purchase online from contactless payment bank cards.
