A job I have just applied for wanted (prefered) a video presentation! Are they for real? Who the hell would do a video clip for a job in accounts? Are we down to auditioning now like going on Big Brother!

Please don't forget to accompany your application with either a short video introduction (preferred) or cover letter that tells us why you're the perfect candidate for the job!

    *shrugs* dont see the problem.

Its a competetive job market out there, interview processes often involve some kind of presentation (if not the traditional presentation of yourself!).

How about no longer being masochistic?
    How about remembering your divinity?
How about unabashedly bawling your eyes out?
How about not equating death with stopping?

What do you mean "god knows what"?

When you apply for a job you tell them your personal details, age, address, personal phone numbers, past jobs, past education.

When you get called for interview you meet them all and they see you. They ask questions, you ask questions.

From a information point of view, I don't see whats left to disclose? Its a short video, not a video dairy, and they even let you do a letter if you preferred!

I don't see the problem, I really don't. And if you don't apply on the grounds of a "optional video" then I can't see how you can complain when you can't get a job!

oops I meant god knows what they DO with it once they have it.

I worked years ago at a company who handed round photos of people so they could all have a laugh at them

The words prefered are used for the video so they will go for people with videos first. Anyway I dont have a video camera so makes no difference to me. I am just saying it's ridiculous imo.

That is quite frankly ridiculous. Yes the job market is competitive at the moment, but asking applicants to send in a video could be open to all kinds of abuse. I read an article on a recruitment site recently that indicated that photos should not be sent in with applications as if you are rejected it could potentially open the company up to all kinds of trouble. I could imagine that videos like this would be even more likely to cause problems.

How on earth are the expecting you to get the video to them in the first place? If I saw an application with this as a requirment I doubt I'd apply.

Good luck LadyMissA, hopefully you will get shortlisted even without the video covering letter.

Which people? People in general? People who applied? Thats rare and childish and you are basing this on one experience. You are closing doors IMO.

Then perhaps a chance to stand out?

Not being rude, but I can see why you are struggling with gaining employment.

yes because I do not want people to laugh at me on a film or photo, they do not know me and I know how people judge people on what they look like

Struggling with getting a job because I wont send a video? Yeah ok cause all the jobs I have applied for have wanted one, NOT!

Does the job involve giving presentations etc.? If so I can see the value, otherwise gives me the creeps a bit.

The issue I'd have with a video as you have no control over who in the company gets to see it.

Yes, you do give up personal information when you apply for a job, and when you go in for an interview you get to meet a specific representative of the company. However an interview is a 2 way thing as you quite rightly pointed out, both parties get to ask questions. In addition most interviews are generally one on one, or at the most a small panel of interviwers, after the interview there is nothing to be passed round the office for others to look at as it is a closed environment and only the people responsible for making the recuitment decisions get to see the candidates.

In this instance, the applicants videos would have to be stored somewhere and there is the potential for someone who is not involved in the recruitment process to find these and have a good laugh at them, pass them onto friends not in the organisation or who knows what.

Maybe I am being overally sensitive, but I would not want a application video to be accessible to anyone other than the individual(s) responsible for hiring.
