Thanks to all on this thread.

    I simply emailed them via the website asking why I'd not been billed at the lower prices. The response was as mentioned earlier that they will apply from the next bill. I replied with this;

while I thank you for the response I have to say I'm mystified and more than a little disappointed by it.
When prices increased in January the bill I received showed a part charge at the new rate and part charge at the old rate. I'd like to see that again in this instance. I don't see how you can have one rule for price increases and another for decreases?
Please escalate this query if the amendment to my bill is not something you are able to authorise.
    Thanks
    Martin

That was yesterday, this morning I received a reply to say that my accounts have been credited.

That proves that if they can do it for you, they could do it for everyone.

However they won't, as they are fully aware that the majority of their customers will not appreciate what is happening, not contact the firm and will pay the extra.

Disgraceful! Just imagine the outcry if the 'wicked' British Gas had pulled such a scam - questions in Parliment no doubt.

The difference is that you would never get a response from an e-mail to BG in less than 24 hours, never mind the refund!

As you say this is bad practise but if customers keep on top of these things, they will get the lower price.

i have just had a quite harsh word with a manager at southern electric about this, he fully admitted that the wording in the initial letter celebrating there price decreases were misleading and he said he will get someone to call me back asap (prob be tuesday with the bank holiday) that can deal with the price decrease he doesnt have the authority to put the credits on my account.

I said if the credits are not applied then i will be going to energywatch with my complaint as southern electric have just admitted that they have been misleading with their customers. he aahhed a lot and said i will sort it out for you dont worry.

i will have been over charged for 2 months gas, and 1 month elec not as bad as some who could be charged 3 months if they had just had a bill before teh price decreases.

i will let you lot know if i have any success!!!!

    Interesting.

I posted a thread today about this, but didnt realise that Scottish Hydro Electric were part of Southern so I didn't find this thread.

My bill was over by approx £30. It was easy enough to get a credit but as soon as I mentioned that I believed that I should not have to "apply" for my refund and that I should not have to to ensure their billing was accurate I was automatically transferred to a team leader (without actually asking for it).

While very nice, she tried to feed me the line about "cannot apply more than 1 pricing change". I then told her to look at some of my older bills from 2006 - where she found multiple prices :-)

At this point she was extremely apologetic and offered to change the *whole* of my last bill to the new prices. Quite a saving. Can I suggest that this whole issue is escalated as an MSE tip? Or maybe even worthy of a mail to <cough>watchdog<cough>?

Nevertheless, I have still contacted the local press who sounded interested in this story.

    Cheers,
    Mike
