I wander if there is a wood based alternative? I'd prefer non-fossil fuel, but it needs to burn for at least 8 hrs unaided.
Please do bear in mind what Muckybut said earlier (he's a sweep, by the way). Slow burning wood is not advised. It creates tars on the chimney or liner which are both hard to remove and potentially flammable.
You'd really be best to find a smokeless fuel that works for you.0 -
I use Excel - I've heard it said it burns too hot so any bars etc wear away quicker, but it's the most popular in this area for solid fuel stoves and it doesn't make as much ash as some. In a very cold winter I leave the stove on for 3 days at a time - it just needs a bit of perking up in the morning.
200 kilos delivered costs me around £71.00
PS I've been in this cottage about 8 years and still have the original fire bricks - with one change of bars. I don't think that's too bad.0 -

BIG NO NO
Never ever slumber burn wood of any sort, even if its as dry as a bone and hard as nails.
Slumber burning will create all sorts of problems in your chimney or flue. Mostly the smoke given off will still be heavily laiden with unburnt fuel, smoke is still fuel as it carries many gasses that aid in combustion. As smoke rises it cools - as it cools it will start to get sticky and will condense into creosote and tar, this is not only a huge fire risk it can and does block chimneys and flues up, thus risking the lives of the occupiers through co poisoning....and yes it does happen !
Always burn wood on the hot side 250 deg +You may click thanks if you found my advice useful0
