Cars not stopping at crossings

As Lum has kindly linked to the regulation concerned, it does require the pedestrian to be "on the carriageway" to be given precedenceSgt_Pepper wrote: »So how about failing to accord precedence £60 and three points?
Simply waiting is not enough.0 -
A big problem is you try to teach your children how to cross the road safely, but then have to tell then that zebra crossings aren't too safe.
I know of several crossings where cars literally drive round you if you are crossing.
Funniest for me was - first car too close to stop, so put foot on crossing as they passed. Second car had time to stop, but didn't. Stepped out after this car, third car drove round me with no intention of stopping. Stepped out further. Next car carried on going, thought I might have to jump , when driver suddenly realised they might have to brake. They end up in a bit of a heap, blowing their horn and swearing. So I make a big show of pointing out the zebra crossing to them.
.
I believe councils prefer pelican crossings to zebra crossings, as the red light gives a legal signal to the driver, whereas a lot of drivers don't seem to understand a zebra crossing gives a pedestrian right of way once they start crossing.0 -
Depends on the country but they normally don't have the same meaning as in the UK. For instance, in France "zebra" crossings simply indicate safe places to cross the road, but French drivers don't have to stop for you (most will floor it if they see you crossing a few hundred yards in front of them!).
Actually in France if a car hits a pedestrian the fault always lies with the driver, unlike here where the pedestrian can be at fault. So whilst what you say may be correct if they do hit the pedestrian they will be in for it with no excuses.0 -

Pelican crossings are one of those things that frequently shouldn't be necessary, but are, because the world is full of a***holes.
That said, I do wish some pedestrians would learn the difference between a crossing and a speed pillow, the latter of which gives absolutely no precedence to pedestrians at all, and are generally at time when drivers are paying less attention to the pavements as they are concentrating on lining up for whatever technique they use to cross the cursed things in the most comfortable manner to them.0 -

Wrong
There was an article by fenton Bresslaw (barrister) in the telegraph 5 or 6 years ago ( guessing law not changed) And to summerise the pedestrian has ABSOLUTE right of way on zebra crossing. Even if someone runs accross it is for the driver to anticipate the crossing may be used and slow accordingly.
poor visibilty due to car illegally parked in zigzag markings? drivers responsibility to recognise danger and slow down.
Driver is ALWAYS at fault if pedestrian is hit on zebra0 -

I think you misunderstand me -and it's not surprising as I did not make myself 100% internet forum clear- What I was saying was, that in France it does not matter if the pedestrian is on a crossing or not, if the car hits them the driver is always at fault and the law says the pedestrian always has priority. In UK **outside of** pedestrian crossing zones the pedestrian can have some fault.0
