That must have done some serious damage to their car!
.
I think surprisingly little actually, it was one of those high level half trolley things, the only visible damage was a cracked bumper skirt and a dent on top of the bonnet..... But it was a dark evening (even though the crossing was flood lit).“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

I might have exaggerated slightly. Actual contact that I can remember at the mo is 9. Theres been double that easily that have just narrowly missed me or I've had to jump out the way of. Compared to the the 1 motorist whos hit me that is a significant difference.
I really don't want to turn this into an anti cyclist topic, I cycle myself in London but as someone who also regularly walks around London I find them worse at cutting through crossings. I'm not sure if its because they feel they're less dangerous or they're less accountable due to the lack of a number plate but I've certainly noticed a difference. The vast majority of those cyclists didn't stop either.0 -
50% of car drivers are selfish these days
i always give eye contact before i walk in front of a lump of metal
still looking forward to the day i can legitimately be seen with a walking stick because boy is it going to get some use:D0 -
You cannot "claim" a crossing by putting a foot on it! The highway code says:
195
Zebra crossings. As you approach a zebra crossing- look out for pedestrians waiting to cross and be ready to slow down or stop to let them cross
- you MUST give way when a pedestrian has moved onto a crossing
- allow more time for stopping on wet or icy roads
- do not wave or use your horn to invite pedestrians across; this could be dangerous if another vehicle is approaching
- be aware of pedestrians approaching from the side of the crossing
Also motorists kill pedestrians on zebra crossings, cyclists don't . And I agree that there are idiot cyclists on the road.
I rely on eye contact and seeing that the maniac in the white van:) has stopped.

I know a lollypop lady who put her foot onto a zebra cross and got it run over by a driver. She was dressed head to foot in high viz and holding a lollypop so not easy to miss.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

The Highway Code is a book of guidelines, not a book of law. Some of those guidelines coincide with laws and these are marked with the keyword "MUST" as opposed to "should".
Only the second bullet point on that list is an actual law that drivers are required to obey. If you are just standing on the pavement, drivers are under no legal obligation to stop.
Of course a considerate driver would stop anyway, but as the OP has discovered those are an increasingly rare breed in some parts of the world.
As soon as the OP puts her foot on the crossing, she is "on the carriageway within the limits of a Zebra crossing," meaning that drivers are legally obligated to stop due to the Zebra Pelican and Puffin Pedestrian Crossings Regulations and General Directions 1997, regulation 25.
This regulation can be (ab)used to claim a crossing, and force drivers to stop by placing a foot on it while the rest of you is safely on the pavement.
Edit: Regulation 24 is also an interesting one given one of the OPs other complaints.0 -

Actually, Cyclists can and do kill pedestrians

I'm now taking a leaf out of the construction sites I work on. You never walk near plant unless you know they've seen you - ie make eye contact.
And if anyone fails to stop I wave at them in a friendly fashion, so that if they do eventually see me, they start to worry that they've done it to someone they know

I'm surprised you didn't learn after the first occasion.Strider590 wrote: »I've been hit twice (nearly thrice) by drivers not stopping for pedestrian crossings.
Always make sure it's safe before crossing.0
