I have driven that journey (well, I carry on about 60 miles past Wolverhampton) dozens of times over the last 20 years, it's very easy and if there are two of you the cost will be a lot less than flying or the train.

Parking can be a pain if you're staying in central Edinburgh and the hotel doesn't have a car park, so you might want to think about leaving the car in one of the park and rides and getting the bus in. Or if you say where you're staying I can suggest places to park for free.

Slpit your ticket at Warrington Bank Quay

Wolverhampton to Edinburgh. Departs Wolverhampton 6.36. Arrives Edinbugh 10.21

Split your ticket Wolverhampton to Warrington Bank Quay, price £7.50. Warrington Bank Quay to Edinbugh, price £12.50.

Total cost for outward journey £20.

I'll let you work out return journey. Just split at Warrington Bank Quay, ( same train .)
Fred - Where's your get up and go?

Barney - It just got up and went.

Probably not sensible after a stag weekend even if you aren't still pished lack of sleep will be a factor.

    Play safe.
  • Thanks for the replies again guys.

I've factored in parking at £18 per day so drivings starting to look more expensive.

I've split the return leg at Warrington and come to around £50 so coupled with the outbound leg at £20 (thanks franandwilma),the trains looking more promising now.

The drive itself would be easy it's not a particularly long way but as the other posters I would be worried about coming home.

In all honesty if the prices are similar flying would be my first option, followed by the train. You'll only realistically need to be at the airport an hour before and the bus from edinburgh airport to the centre is a good service. Once you're in the centre you'll get anywhere you like by bus.

If you can work a reasonably priced train journey that doesn't involve waiting hours on a connection then it's always going to be an option too - a bit more relaxing than flying I find as you cut out the cattle queue (if flying with a certain orange airline)

Unfortunately the cheaper return tickets do seem to have gone.

Just be aware, if you get a particularly pedantic conductor, you might have to get off and reboard the train at WBQ. Just don't argue with them? Do it. :rotfl:

While it looks like train is the winner, I used to regularly drive to Edinburgh, so I can tell you what it's like.

M6 I'm sure you're well aware of, hell until you get north of Preston, then it's pretty nice as it swooshes through the hills of Cumbria. Tebay services is the best services on the entire network with all the food they sell grown locally. The M6->M74 changeover has finally been sorted and no longer has a bit of horrible congested dual carriageway in the middle, which is nice.

What I then do to make the drive nicer is come off a bit sooner, and take the A701 to Moffat. It's definitely the scenic route, but it's a lovely long single carriageway run that twists through the hills, and really fun to drive, perks you right up after several hours of the M6. Just don't do this during caravan season!
  • Thanks again for the help everyone.

I've spoken to my pal who I will travel up with and together we've decided to forget all about cost and just enjoy the drive. We've been best pals since we were 9 and used to have road trips all over the place in rubbish cars so now we have access to a nice car we would only dream of back then we're going to make the most of it and drive. I'm not to concerned about the drink drive element, I wont be getting hammered and it'll be a nice excuse incase (when) things get silly! I can't take the hangovers like I used to!

Lum, thanks for the route advice. I've done Birmingham to Preston loads of times as I trained in Hutton. I've only ever gone further up the M6 twice before and briefly dipped my feet in Scotland at Gretna Green just to say I've been but have never had the chance to go back. I'd prefer to make the trip as nice as possible and just an enjoyable drive. I'm looking into insurance now to get my pal on the docs so we can share the drive.

Only ammendment I'd have to the above route is rather than take the 702 I would travel further up and cut across the A71 - as before it's a long, wide, fast and relatively straight road. Just be careful as you don't want to hit anywhere east of West Calder later than say 3.30 as the 71 jams right up.

Also means that depending which side of the city you're staying in you don't need to touch the bypass at all - though if you're early enough it wouldn't matter anyway.
