Anyone want to come on holiday with me?

My son booked an all inclusive holiday to Greece last year for myself and my OH and him and his girlfriend.Paid in full all inclusive for May this year
It was a suprise to celebrate our wedding aniversary.
One month later he was made redundant and split up with girlfriend !
It was a lovely idea but son has now just started very good job but they won't let him take the 10 days in May..
OH is struggling with his business and now says he can't go ..
Travel agent says it is too late to change holiday dates and cost to cancel will be nearly two thirds of the cost of the holiday , over £1300.
So now I am the only one left who can actually go on this holiday booked for 4 adults .. with 2 double rooms.
The travel agents have suggested contacting the holiday insurance company as sons insurance does cover redundancy , but I have a feeling they will argue as it is only now that he knows he can't get the time off they won't cover it.
This problem has now been passed to me to resolve
Anyone with any suggestions or advice is welcome , could we sell it on or if anyone fancies a reduced rate all inclusive holiday to Rhodes with someone they have never met , who is left holding the baby yet again , feel free to apply.:o

I used to be a travel agent way back when children were twinkles
Generally name changes are allowed so if you knew someone who was willing to take it on that could be an option.
Sometimes they'll change the entire holiday and transfer monies over too.
Check the insurance cover too. Your son was made redundant which you'll be able to prove. That fact that he's got another job should be immaterial.
If you're having no luck with the travel agent direct you could always contact the tour operator directly.
Hope you work things out0 -
Why is it costing so much to cancel? or do you mean the money you'll lose?
I'd love to go with you, but I already have a long weekend planned that month, and no cash! lol
Your son - did he tell them about his holiday plans before joining? If so, i thought they had an obligation to honour them?February wins: Theatre tickets0 -

I thought this too- if you have a pre-existing holiday booking whan you start with a new employer they usually (in my experience) ask for the dates. You may not get paid leave but should be allowed the time off.
Get your son to double-check, perhaps by someone asking for an appilication formand see whether it mentions it there. Otherwise on to HR reminding them that it's a surprise for his parents' wedding anniversary.... Maybe he could offer to take unpaid leave for the ten days, to make it seem like a better deal to them!
They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.0 -
9th to the 19th May

it is a small manufacturing business .. owner has said , no way.
Son didn't mention it at the interview and was offered the job at the interview.. went in on Saturday for no wages to get an insight and mentioned it then.
Told .. no way , you will have to move it
This is a 20K a year job so he really has no choice ..
so .. how about a meet in Rhodes from the 9th to 19th May for 3 members of MS probably all paid for except £35 name change?
Unless the insurance pays out..
Thanks for the replies

Ahh, well, that's where you son has fallen down a bit. He should've declared it at the interview. A lesson for the future, as unfortunately, there's nothing he can do about it right now.
Unless.....what are the reasons that his employer has given for not allowing it? There have to be reasonable reasons for denying holiday requests (such as a known, exceptionally busy time of year for that business, or no cover available (though this can only be used so many times) etc).February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
Is it actually your wedding anniversary during that period?
Are you sure your DH can't be persuaded to go? Just the two of you? Would be uninhibited without DS and gf next door, lol!:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -

That's not true, employers don't have to give any reason for not allowing any specific holiday dates, as long as you get your correct amount over the year.
I wouldn't be happy with someone disappearing for 2 weeks a month after starting with us either - unless I already knew when I offered them the job.
We had a new starter this year and she asked for a week off just after starting and we said no. It's too disruptive to the training/settling in period.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
Where is Rhodes is it? We went last year and loved it.
You could end up agreeing to somebody from this forum going who could be a rapist, drug dealer and get you to smuggle drugs, pedophile, loony, etc etc, and you are asking them to share a room with you?!?!0
