Quiz Question...

...ripped shamelessly from elsewhere (source to be revealed as it is a good, if bearish, read).

Which country is this?
A superpower with crippling debt, exorbitant taxes, glaring inequality, wages far exceeding those of competitors, high and persistent unemployment, lack of basic workplace skills, malnutrition, a rapidly growing rival across the ocean, heated debates about the role of government in the economy, and widespread pessimism about the future.

If you want to Google the words then you can probably get the 'answer' but that isn't really the point.

Well there are only 2 (?) superpowers.
    USA and China.
Clearly USA applies (to my mind, although malnutrition is probably more due to poor choices than starvation) and I'm sure lots of it does apply to China but I'm not sure about "crippling debt" and "widespread pessimism".

The UK in the 1800s - I didn't need to ""google" it - I subscribe to the John Maudlin newsletter.... The rival across the sea would be the US.

It could be the US and China today...

Is it historical? I think the malnutrition and glaring inequality point towards that. I'm guessing Great Britain but it could be any historic superpower I suppose, from the Roman Empire to the Spanish one. I do think it is about an empire though, rather than a superpower as we consider it today.

    USA

And for those watch the likes of sex and the city and desperate housewives, and giggle at apple pie comedy such as happy days and Fraiser would be shocked to see what much of the southern states are like, I am talking seriously povety like you would never see in any part of the UK.

I have family in Lychburgh Virginia(near waltons mountains) and I quite often take off to Tennessee and Alabama and the North and South Carolina when I am visiting. As much as I love the lazy relaxed southern states and most of the people I am always shocked at how poverty stricken many are, and it is not just the Black community.

It could well be the USA of today. I was watching supersize & superskinny last night (highbrow I know) and couldn't help thinking that the American dream has been twisted into a perverted nightmare.

British fatty goes to USA to see American even fatter fatty. American fatty says he only has a few months to live and he's determined to do something about it. So they pop out in the Americans car (about the size of a National Express coach) to get a snack and both eat an extreme burger costing next to nothing and containing upwards of 2000 calories. I'm no dietician but if a food has 'extreme' (or bucket) in it's name it's likely not to be on the healthy option part of the menu.

Why do they need to (generally) consume so much?
