there was a series on BBC about growing your own veg and it covered herbs and all sorts. The book for the series was about 12 quid but bookpeople are selling it cheap i think a fiver or so could be a good investment if you're thinking of growing more stuff in the future
  • Hi
I sowed my garlic about a month ago, in pots. It's supposed to be best if you plant it in winter. Mine have got green shoots already:A x

You can plant it now, for hard neck varieties esp. and harvest around June. But you can also plant in spring for cropping later in the summer.

Since you're going in pots I wouldn't worry about the wet.

There's nothing like the taste of fresh picked garlic it's great!

  • I have also heard it is a good idea to plant garlic near roses as it keeps the greenfly off because they don't like the smell!

    Hi
If you put them out now, then they get the frosts which is what splits the cloves up.
Mine all went out a few weeks ago, but the shorted day is usually the day to put them out on; as above - and harvest on midsummers night. I just wanted to try for an earlier harvest.

forgot to add; you can grow pretty much anything in pots, i have posted on here in the past about what I have grown in plastic containers in the past; and how to do it. Also add to that upside down cherry tomatoes - worked a treat and avoided the blight this year.

    Thanks for all your replies

The chap that i work with has his allotment so he brought in some garlic that he had just dug up. Its great and lasts for ages, i still have two bulbs left to go at.

I will plant them at weekend and see how i get on :)

My garden isnt massive so not sure what else is suitable for small gardens. I already have herbs in there from previous owners :)
