Ras dont I know it. I have to be crb checked quite regularly because of my job but never had a problem with them. Just explained the situation and theyve been fine. Actually did even ask the passport office if a crb would be acceptable as it showed all my names but you can guess the answer. Gotta love em.

    Yes you can.

All the Passport office is interested in is the paper trail back to your birth certificate. As you haven't had an "official" change from birth name to Step Father's name, I think this is the easiest way to do it.

Come on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.

Totally, all you are doing is giving up the right to use your birth name and it shows the papertrail for passport office.

Dare I ring them and ask? Actually probably not a good idea they'll only confuse me even more. I'll suck it and see. Certainly got to be worth a try. If not Skeggy here I come!

Or miss out the SF name completely and go from birth name to married name :)

This would only work if the birth name was used on the marriage certificate. If the step-father's name was used as the maiden name, you need to show the link between the name on the birth certificate and the name given on the marriage cert.

Marriage certificate doesn't come into it where deedpoll is concerned.

All you're showing is that you are abandoning one name for the other. As she is abandoning the Birth Certificate name and going straight to married name. Or use the deed poll as shown with abandonment of both names and married name as new name.

I have copied my deed poll word for word, changing name (s) and the only thing that needs amended is what I've already pointed out

I have no personal experience of this but can tell you about a situation involving a family that I know which may help.

The mother and father who were not married registered the baby in the fathers name. However the father did a disapearing act a few weeks later when they were told that the child would in all probability require extensive support life long. He has never been in contact with mother or child since that day. The mother after a few months informed her GP, hospital, child benefit people, and all other agencies that her child was known by her surname. None of them questioned this and the name was changed no problem. A solicitor drew up a statutory declaration stating that the child was known by the mothers name by all official bodies including NHS and LEA.

A few years later she married and had a child with her new partner. Her older childs name was changed again so that they had the same name as their sibling. The same solicitor issued a new statutory declaration stating that this child was born with x name, spent a period known by y name, (with an insert stating that this was the mothers name) and then after the mothers marriage had become known by z name. Again it was stated that he was known by this name to all. A new passport was issued without question in this the 3rd name.

For each statutory declaration she paid the grand sum of £10.00.

Could you have the same as the second declaration drawn up stating your birth name, then the name you grew up using, with an explanation that you were known by this name to all until your marriage where you became known by your husbands name?

I grew up using my stepfathers surname but my birth certificate shows my biological fathers surname. And when I married I used my stepfathers name as my maiden name and noone queried it.(

I thought the passport people needed a paper trail from name to name. At the moment there is a birth cert in one name and a marriage certificate using a different name. Isn't it that gap that's the problem? felixculpa needs to show that the birth cert and the marriage are for the same person, not what name she wants to be known as now?

No. The marriage certificate would obviously need to link up with a birth certificate if it were used for a passport application, but the whole point of mine (and Mazza's) suggestion was not to use the marriage certificate at all, just the birth certificate and deed poll. There is no requirement for her to use the marriage certificate in a passport application.
