hi all
i do post here but on this occasion wish to remain anon as i'm sure you will understand being very upset and embarassed. anwyay not sure if this is the best place to post but here goes....
i've just split up with my partner after discovering via a mutual friend she is buying a house without telling me
we live together (rent) and have a joint account to pay the rent bills food etc.
obviously the trust has gone, so i am moving out. i've told the landlords and offered to pay half the months rent notice, which they say is fine. i've contacted the bank and have the paperwork to finish our joint bank account. she knows all of this and is ok with it.
what i need to know is what else do i need to look out for? is there any other legalaties i need to cover or any other possible pitfalls/tricks she could be playing? I intend to take pics of the gas/elec meters on my last day contact the providers and pay 50% of both.
this leaves me rather short as i am paying 50% next month's rent as well as having to find new rent and deposit.
if it makes any difference she earns a lot more than me and we have been paying the same each month into the joint account.
thanks for reading, any suggestions advice would be great

If they are in your name you are wholly liable for the whole amount. If you pay 50% and she doesn't, they'll come after you for it all. They have no interest in your petty relationship issues. And pictures mean nothing.0 -
You need to give formal written notice that you are leaving.
When did you contract start, end and what is the rental date?
Which country are you in?If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
thanks both. all bills are in both our names, in england and the rental date is next week. agents suggested an email notice after i called them and explained also said to pay her half the rent and she can pay them the full month's rent. have done the email this morning
edit to add: we are on an ongoing rental, months notice from us, two from them, been here 2 years0 -
If you are outside of the fixed period of your AST then you need to get your name removed from the tenancy. Otherwise you will be jointly liable for the entire time your partner stays there.
You also want to get your name of all your bills. It would be best to close your joint account.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0 -
Have you got any credit cards together ? Close joint bank account now.
move on with life if you have split up.
Dont be bitter life is too short find someone else ASAP0 -
Either party can terminate a joint tenancy so pay your half of the rent and terminate the tenancy. If she wishes to continue with the tenancy then she will have to set up a new one. Same goes with the utilities.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

I can't believe she decided to buy a house without telling you! and didnt even tell you herself.
I had a similar situation with a friend (but she wasnt buying a house...she was just a psyco) and I agree with the advice youve already been given. You seem like your covering yourself, did you put a deposit down on this flat? Its good that you have the balls to move out instead of staying in an unhappy situation.0 -
I was a little taken ablck too, Lottielou. When I asked her if it was true, she got very upset that I knew and could not believe anyone would "betray" her and tell me. Anyway water under the proverbial. Joint account sorted, utilities sorted (we had to both be there to talk to them at once as confirmation) and am now happily in a new place.
LA accepted what I told them over the phone and asked me to email as official notice. Have not had a reply yet, even though I sent another email asking that an email was enough. Will chase this up after the BHs finish.
Cheers all0 -
Ask for, and send everything in writing, with proof of posting. Don't be cynical, but don't let things slide.0

She could be buying it as a surprise for both of you.. or as a B2L investment0
