iPad is the wrong tool for learning web development. You have to cater for the masses, who run a flavour of Windows. There are many browsers available for Windows. Sure, you want to test anything you develop in an Apple environment, but suppose you develop a nice little site and then discover it doesn't work as intended with Internet Explorer?
Similarly, don't bother with a tablet, go for a notebook or netbook if you're serious.

  • Really, really bad idea to buy a tablet to learn web development. You'd be far better off with a cheap old netbook.4

Even something like this would be ok - http://www.byfarthecheapest.com/products/IBM-ThinkPad-X31-Laptop-%252d-Pentium-M-1.4-GHz-%252d-1GB-Ram-%252d-40-GB-HDD-%252d-WinXP-Pro.html

You can't learn web-design from a video. You need to practice it and play with it yourself. You could always start by reading some books during breaks and then practicing at home in the evening.

You need to decide what you are wanting to do.

As others have said, you cannot use a tablet to meaningfully do web development on it. At best you could operate a CMS but this isnt what you stated you wanted to achieve.

If on the other hand you are really saying you want a tablet for showing video etc and not actually for doing web development then you may be able to get something.

Given it seems you are ashamed of not having a shiny piece of kit then I wouldnt recommend getting a £100 tablet as you are more likely to pull it out and it not work than it does.

You can pick up a secondhand Playbook for about £150 given you say you like Blackberry. Unfortunately even the 1st gen iPad is at least £250 secondhand

Well if this is the case, it seems you've decided which tablet you want. The blackberry playbook. You can still buy it.

The bottom line is ipad, 1, 2, or even 3/new/a/the/whateveritscalled, is unique in as much as there is no absolute direct competition. There are other tablets that have other OS on it, but if you want an Ipad like tablet, then you can only go for an ipad. If you want a cheap tablet there are numerous on the market. Cheap, but not cheerful, and you will struggle with them. At the very least you want capacitive screens, which then drop out a large number of sub £100 tablets. Good comparability, good usage, good OS and there go the rest.

Currently the market is Good, reliable tablets at a reasonable price (whether you agree or not) or Cheap, crappy, Chinese based tablets that neither work fully, or break down, hard to repair, costly to replace, and generally cause frustrations. But hey they're cheap!

I'm afraid I will always recommend someone to either not buy a cheap one and expect miracles, or even just reasonable ideas, or save up and buy one with good reviews, updates regularly, good access to all apps, and be nice to use.

On a money saving forum, technology requests are always problematic. After all to save money; sure get that cheapy tablet. But most people wont recommend them, because you'll be back, crying because it froze, broke, doesn't do this, or that, or frankly is just horrible to use. What they can recommend is tablets that are dearer, but work. Just work. Just do what you want, how you want it, in a nice user friendly way. Those ones are not sub £150-200 (at least!)
