I have just moved house and have got broadband.
My desktop does not have wireless and my netbook doesn't have a cd drive!!
My question is - can I turn my desktop wireless? Do I need an adaptor of some sort? What should I buy
I have got to get an external DVD drive for my netbook. Any recommendations?
Thank you xxx

You have two choices - a USB wifi dongle or an internal PCI card. The PCI card option has the best range but if the wireless router is in an adjacent room or you've a small house and no thick walls a USB one should be OK. Basically if you have wifi on your mobile phone and it can pick it up where the PC is, a USB dongle should work.
As for the external DVD drive, PC World do some cheap ones although you don't really need one. Just share the desktop CD drive on the network and access it on the netbook from there.0 -
Something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-2-0-Wireless-802-11n-300Mbps-WIFI-Dongle-for-Window-7-Vista-XP-Mac-PC-Laptop-/250889517162?pt=UK_Computing_LaptopAccess_RL&hash=item3a6a2e386a#ht_2936wt_910 ?
I'll have to wait until I get a dongle before I can create a network won't I?
Can you tell that I have not had to do this before - my ex was the computer nerd not me.0 -
Plenty of choice on Play.com or 7dayshop.
You will need to match the dongle with your router. If your router is G you will need a G dongle, if it's N you need N.
I use a wireless dongle and the desktop is about 20ft away from the router.0 -
I have a Samsung external dvd drive for my netbook which costs £22 and works very well.

The dongle does not have to G or N specific. If your router only supports upto G, then a N rated dongle will work fine, as it is backwards compatible.
Chances are if you have just got Broadband, then will a very good chance your router will be N. Do you know what router you are using.
That samsung as posted above is a decent external driveMansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -
I've just looked at the box and it says:
Sky wireless router v.6
PC with ethernet port or wireless connection (IEEE 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n)
Mac xxxxx
OS Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, 7 ........
So I presume this means that I can use a dongle that says either g or n.
My desktop and router are in the same room. The router is next to the TV so I can plug the cable in for Anytime0 -
It's how I connect my desktop upstairs to my BT router downstairs. A USB dongle works just fine for me.0

This is wrong. All of them are backwards compatible so a G dongle will work on a N router and a N dongle will work on a G router and all combinations.
That dongle on Ebay will do the job. You can set up the network without the dongle, just setting up the wifi and connecting your netbook for now.0
