Hi LauraJo, didn't see your question below and bear in mind everything is down to individual choice. I feed 4 adults and 2 teenagers on between £60-£80 per week. Depending upon whether I have to stock up on cleaning stuff etc. I cook from scratch but tend to batch cook, and go for variety in recipes.

Not sure if that helpsb but lends a different perspective.

    Best wishes Tilly

Wow that's amazing! You must be a great cook. That gives me something to work towards....

I spend anywhere between 100-170 for one depending on what I've got in store. Sometimes I cook for my bf but sometimes he cooks for me so equals out and I often get free lunches at work. I think I spend too much but I've looked at what I buy and unless I make choices like not buy free range chicken and buy more mince, swap back to white pasta/rice from whole meal or reduce my salads/fruit - I can't see how I can do it. I dont always eat meat. I look out for offers, do comparison baskets on my supermarket.com. I occasionally bulk cook and I look out for whoopsies. I don't have a garden so can't grow my own. So although I could eat cheaper sometimes the trade off isn't worth it. I do think your OH's friend is bonkers though for spending that much!

Sounds like we are about the same... I think they're bonkers too! Seriously... How can they find the time to eat that much! I have since mentioned that to them and they are reviewing their buying.... Wish I could Liam their savings for my op!! ;)

I LOVE cooking - so does my DH. Give me a spreadsheet and a few cookery books and I am in planning heaven.

We do grow all our own salads, garlic, chilli, and a host of veg so that has a positive £ impact. You don't need much space and although we have raised beds, we used to use pots. :):)

    Good luck.

I've been aiming for £300 a month to feed 2 adults and 2 little ones, included in my £300 is all our cleaning products, toiletries & nappies. I do find just having a weekly spend total in mind makes me think about what goes in my online basket and I do take things out again if I've gone too much over.

Great overpayment :T Enjoy your wine

Thanks its a nice treat ... Along with the jelly beans! £300 on all that is impressive... I don't have children but hear they are expensive to run :)

Wonder if that £400 includes Drink? I rarely drink now - not because I'm a saint - because I'm stingy!

A guy I work with was moaning about the cost of their supermarket shop...but then another time he was telling us that they like a couple of bottles of wine on a Friday night.

I was behind a family of 3 last weekend and they were buying all sorts but included was quite a few ready meals - not cheap ones - and convenience food (ready grated cheese and cubed cheese?). They had also all picked a magazine each the cheapest of which was £2.50....the dad was horrified when the bill was £129.... It didn't look like a weeks worth of 3 meals a day for 3 people to me

I know, people have no idea wat they spend! Although ready grated cheese is amazing!! I'd prob eat a lot less if I bothered to grate it myself! I'm sure my mates shop prob does include booze ( its got to hasn't it??!). I don't with my shop and it well annoys oh but I think if we want beer it should come of spends not food budget, same goes for takeaways... After all they are a 'nice to have' in my view!

Exactly! Booze is Social Budget not Grocery. Duh!!

My convenience food weakness is prepared Mango and Pinapple. Peeling them is an almighty faff and even though they're cheaper I don't eat them all, and I hate tinned Pineapple.....so sinful and expensive packs it is

After all the inspiration of the last few replies I'm going to try and make May the £150 food shop month! Going to have to do this without oh realising which won't be easy since he does the cooking and occasionally the shopping! I can try and do all the shopping this month so that should help! Need to google some budget recipes because since I can't cook I am a bit clueless!
