How do the vouchers work - are they numbered and issued to you personally, can they be used like cash in a shop or are they effectively account credits?

If an individual voucher can be linked to you and can't be spent like cash, wouldn't be a major problem for them to twig if it's being used by somebody else (hope that makes sense).

It has a card number and PIN, but it is not linked to any specific person.

If it's like one of the mobile top-up vouchers (scratch off to uncover the number) and can be bought for cash, don't see how it could be invalidated (apart from showing the number in the photo as previously mentioned).

All of these cards are authorised online through the till system. Next can block any of these cards if they have a proper legal reason. For example some retailers allow you to register gift cards on line. If you report it as lost it can simply be deactivated and a new one issued to you.

There are many reasons why retailers don't want these traded. Stolen credit cards being used to buy them and abuse of their refund policies are two.

But how can they block them if they dont know the card numbers changing hands?

    They can't, probably.

'If this card is presented for payment in a Next store or against a Next Directory account, it may be declined. '

I expect this is part of their cut and paste warning message. If the number on the card had been visible, they'd have stopped it.
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

Basically they are just putting a warning shot across your bows.

If you read the email they sent you it's all about maybe's i.e the card maybe declined. It's generic.
  • Hi there, I would just like to strongly advise against anyone selling next refund cards. I used to work high up in Next until just recently, and I can confirm that next refund cards have completely different t&c's to gift vouchers, although admittedly I dont think half of them are printed on the piece if card you get with it! Basically, when you refund an item without a reciept, you have to give you name and postcode etc to the sales assistant, this info is stored so HO can monitor returns. This info is added to your refund card, so when you go to pay for an item using it the till should (I say should as there have been some hiccups!) prompt for those details. If you sell the card, whoever buys it will need this info otherwise it will be valueless to them. Of course you could always provide the buyer with this info, but Im not sure where people morals lie with that one! I can understand Next contacting you regarding selling the item, as refund cards are very different to gift vouchers, but I dont think they would be able to trace you in order to cancel the card, it depends on how much info ebay are allowed to disclose to them. Also, I think it would be a little unfair of next to cancel it, because as far as you were aware you were not doing anything wrong as you just thought it was the same as a gift card. Im sure if you email them back explaining this and how you didnt realise they will be fine about it, customer services are usually very helpful. The refund card scheme is a new initiative and Im sure they understand that customers are not always aware there is a difference with them compared to gift cards/vouchers.
    Hope this helps someone!
