unfortunately I cant even sort it out as I have now tried to get through to phone banking twice to ask what has gone wrong and i cant even get through to ASK - I have been locked out for not answering the security questions correctly! they asked me 7 or 8 ones including really complicated ones like what was the last direct debit on your account - the exact sum! The one statement I didnt have in front of me, this was after date of birth, address, card number, card verification number, is it a joint account, do you have any other santander cards? much more than they used to ask
I wouldnt mind but I actually wonder if THEY have MY data correct as I dont think i answered wrong! then they said they'd call me at home within 4 -6 hours and rang in 2 hours - 10 mins before I got home. They have told me I have to go into a branch with PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE of my identity (is this a money laundering investigation) - all this just to start a dialogue to find out what THEY have done WRONG!!!! They are going to send me a phone banking number - but REALLY!!! Cant complain, cant even talk to them, they say they wont talk to me.
So when I can get round to it (and when my new passport arrives) I will truck up at the bank (30 mins away) and try to find out why they stopped four cheques and who they were to - then try to make sure they dont charge me - then move my account because I think you will all agree - THIS JUST ISNT ON! Of course 'they are just trying to protect my money' - from me - or maybe they are a Spanish bank on the verge of cataclysm and need to be really careful -whaddya think?
If it were me I would reply to their letter by recorded delivery so they can't say they haven't received it (also send a copy to their complaints department) outlining all the problems you have had and ask for a copy of the actual proof they have that you cancelled your cheques.

Mention that, because of all the problems you have been having you are seriously considering moving to another bank. Be factual and polite in your letter but leave nothing out.0 -
thank you for your advice
am going to branch tomorrow as two more notifications of cancelled cheques arrived today
i have to complain to get my money back as i assume all the people who have had cheques stopped will be charged and I should pay them (using a lloyds bank cheque I fancy....)0 -
Ok - went to branch they rang up and said that in fact my account had been blocked for over a month because "someone (me) had tried to make an internet transaction"
I asked why they hadnt told me it was blocked or called to verify that it was me - no answer. He said "well lets not rush to judgment it may have been somebody else and not you! once we unlock the account we'll be able to see, wont we?" I said it had been me registering for internet banking and were they not slightly more ok about it seeing that I had made a payment to another bank account in my own name "oh well these thieves are very clever you know .. that is just the kind of thing they would do. He rang head office and said I had all my sANTANDER cards, a switch card from Lloyds, all my statements and a council tax bill and something from HMRC. They said that all that was no good as I had been locked out of telephone security twice for not knowing my overdraft limit (I dont have an overdraft limit) and I would have to come in again with my passport! He actually said he could probably take a driving licence if I had one or my birth certificate but at this stage he would rather have my passport.
No apology for cancelling my cheques and not warning me my account was blocked - just more about protecting my money for me. There is absolutely nothing I can do about unlocking my account till my passport arrives so I await it eagerly so I can clear my account.I think you will understand that even the most passive of people could hardly keep a Santander account open after this has happened to them so it will be closed and all the money moved to a proper bank that works!
And by the way didnt banks used to have a copy of your signature on the premises...
