Santander stopped my cheque without permission.

Options
I wrote a cheque last month to cover fees at an auction house - it was only for £10 or so - but on Saturday received a letter from Santander saying that I had asked them to stop it.
I did no such thing so 'phoned the bank immediately and they said that they'd email me within 48 hours after they'd looked into it - nothing so far, but what on earth were they playing at?

There's anough money in my account, although like many others I haven't written a cheque for ages, probably a few years.

I'll just bet I get the auction house on my back for this AND what are the odds that Santander will try and charge me for 'stopping' said cheque.

Obviously I'll wait for their explanation, but others be warned.

I'd change my bank but for the fact that they'd probably screw up the transfer.

I'd say that you've been a MSE forum member for long enough to have picked up that if anything can go wrong in banking then it'll happen to Santander. The best advice must be to use this as an opportunity to move to a bank that knows what it's doing - you're probably right about the transfer if you let them do it, so do it yourself.

    I know, I know :o

It's the fear of them messing up that stops me - I changed both our gas supplier and phone company last year - and both fouled it up. :(

I shall echo the thoughts of changing banks if you are so unhappy with them, santander have been known to make errors, several errors in fact.change bank and be happy.

Mistakes happen, it's just they happen at Santander more than anywhere else.

Get yourself changed, a massive proportion of bank a/c switches happen with no problems at all.

Just an idea, but as you haven't written a cheque for a few years, is there a chance that you reported the cheque book stolen / lost a few years ago.

That would explain why they stated that you had asked them to stop it. They might not have meant the individual cheque, but the whole book.
  • Is it any coincidence that Satan nerd is an anagram of Santander?

Also Tanned Ars is an anagram too which is what you end up having after being lured with their offers to move to them.

I suggest that you contact Santander again and ask when and how the request to stop the cheque was received.

and once they've apologised and compensated you, find a real bank,.
  • Santander have now stopped four of my cheques in the last fortnight - and sent me a letter telling me I asked them to! i didnt - I am £5,900 in credit. Fortunately its not my main account but my son's school the recipient of the cheques must think I am well dodgy
unfortunately I cant even sort it out as I have now tried to get through to phone banking twice to ask what has gone wrong and i cant even get through to ASK - I have been locked out for not answering the security questions correctly! they asked me 7 or 8 ones including really complicated ones like what was the last direct debit on your account - the exact sum! The one statement I didnt have in front of me, this was after date of birth, address, card number, card verification number, is it a joint account, do you have any other santander cards? much more than they used to ask
I wouldnt mind but I actually wonder if THEY have MY data correct as I dont think i answered wrong! then they said they'd call me at home within 4 -6 hours and rang in 2 hours - 10 mins before I got home. They have told me I have to go into a branch with PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE of my identity (is this a money laundering investigation) - all this just to start a dialogue to find out what THEY have done WRONG!!!! They are going to send me a phone banking number - but REALLY!!! Cant complain, cant even talk to them, they say they wont talk to me.
So when I can get round to it (and when my new passport arrives) I will truck up at the bank (30 mins away) and try to find out why they stopped four cheques and who they were to - then try to make sure they dont charge me - then move my account because I think you will all agree - THIS JUST ISNT ON! Of course 'they are just trying to protect my money' - from me - or maybe they are a Spanish bank on the verge of cataclysm and need to be really careful -whaddya think?
