This may help.
I guess there will be a sliding scale (and a cliff edge) as you earn more.0 -

There are rent changes so you might be affected.0 -
Keep your eye on future changes when the current benefit system is scrapped and it is moved over to the Universal Credit system - dig out the proposal papers on this.
At the moment, it is recognised that the steep withdrawal of benefits and the steep introduction to taxation acts as a disincentive for benefit claimants to work longer hours or move into employment at all.
The govt aims to change this in the future to ensure that households are always better off in employment than on benefits. I can't give you any specific details, that's just the general principle under UC.
When UC is introduced in the next couple of years, tax credits will be scrapped, so too, will the hours thresholds of 16 hours for lone parents, 24 hours for couples with children, 30 hours for single people over 25, etc. There will be greater conditionality - those who are required to work full time but can't find enough employment may have to continue to sign on, similar to JSA now.
So just keep your ears open about UC.0 -

Why wouldn't you be able to afford the rent? You'd be earning more money so you'd have money to be able to afford the rent.
God forbid you should earn enough to start contributing to the cost of living....0 -
thanks for the helpful input!
i pay a very large top up on the rent now so if i they knocked my hb down further i could not afford the rent0 -

However they'd only knock down your HB if your income went up so you'd be no worse off. I fail to see what the problem is. If you earn £100 a week and get £50 HB but your rent is £100 you have £50 after paying rent. If you earn £150 a week, don't get HB and your rent is £100 you have £50 after paying rent.0 -

The fact of the matter is that with an increase in income under the current system, there can be very steep withdrawal of benefits made worse through the payment of taxes, plus the extra expenses such as transport and child care costs. In the current system, it is possible to do extra hours and either be worse or virtually no better off.
This is supposed to change under the move to UC, removing the fixed hours of work to achieve tax credits that takes place now, ensuring people are always better off in employment, removing the discincentives to take on higher pay or more hours.
Any tenant who has to pay more than their LHA rate, in work or out of work, is likely to be at a much greater risk of struggling to afford their accommodation.0 -

Better off getting the time with your child while maintaining your entitlement. When your life is a mess, stop and think what you are doing before bringing more kids into it, it's not fair on them.
