I use liquid rather than powder

I used liquid for years, until I found out that using liquid is what produces the black slime in the tray and all around the rubber lining :¬(

I have started using Soapnuts which works out at about 2p - 3p per wash and am impressed by initial washes. You only need about 6 soapnuts and these last for about 6 washes - you can then throw them in the compost. Just bought a 1kg bag for £10 so will be interesting to see how long this lasts.

Does half an egg cup full really get your cloths clean? think I use far to much when using powder

Much cleaner than when I was using the Sainsburys Basics stuff (at the proper dosage). This stuff is ground up tablets so it's more concentrated than ordinary washing powder and 1/2 egg cup works out at around 1 tablet, I would guess. I do use a full egg cup and a scoop of oxy stuff if it's something nasty and ground in like grass stains or really, really filthy stuff, but I last bought a tub of the Oxy stuff 3 months ago and I've not used half of it yet, so I don't use it often!!

It probably also helps that I rarely wash at 30, towels and bedding are usually washed at 90 with no conditioner and clothing often washed at 60, occasionally 40 if it is something I think may shrink. I have three children, a plumber for a husband and a dog and not enough time to be re-washing stuff as it didn't wash properly the first time. I use the non bio washing powder rather than the bio too, as my eldest has eczema - not that changing to non bio seems to have made a blind bit of difference to it.

I originally found the link to the eBay seller from another thread on here similar to this - I can't remember who posted it though, but I remember that I had never considered buying washing powder from eBay before! I also get my dishwasher powder from there too now.

ETA - I have a bag of soapnuts in the back of the laundry cupboard I have only used a couple of times. I just didn't get on with them at all, but I know some people are total converts and swear by them.

my dad had a skin condition and was itching all the time, due to the washing powder mum used Persil at the time, so he decided that his clothes where to be washed in 1 powder, it was a brand that netto's used to sell in a big box, own brand, like the formil and aldi's own brand.
mum used that brand on his clothing and mine, at a 40'c wash, he stopped itching and it also help his skin as he was'nt scratching.
Reason i like it, the smell wasnt as strong as the others.
It might be a good idea just to try a small box for your eldest sons clothes,
small note about the 90'c the saving on the powder over cost of electic heating the water is killing the savings you made.
my mum also uses the oxy cleaner powder 500g or 1kg to bring out the whiteness, she gets in the 99p shop, yep it was the 500g pack.
  • Have a look on the coupon thread for the supersavvyme link, they have coupond for money of verious ones and if you combine the coupon with a special offer it brings it down to less than half price quite often.

Thanks Andy, I shall look into the Nettos powder, but I've never seen a branch of Nettos! I shall get OH to find one on his travels (we are in the midlands, so he should be able to find one somewhere).

I spent a little while weighing it all up a while ago and decided that as I could make some pretty good savings on the powder, I could go back to washing at 60 or 90 rather than 40. Being on economy 7 means I can put the 90deg washes in at night and they work out cheaper than the 60deg washes in the day, electricity-wise. Whether it is the powder or the temp that works, I haven't really spent too long thinking about it, but it works for us. With OH being a plumber and fixing other peoples toilets etc, I would always be doing at least one load at 60 each day, even if I did go back to washing at 40. Personally, I'd like to boil wash his clothes ;)

I use this seller on eBay. I find that one bag lasts us around 90 days and we do a minimum of 2 washes each day, sometimes 3 or 4. It's excellent powder and we use about 1/2 an egg cup full per wash. At the current price, it works out at just over 9p per day, not per wash - I've never counted the number of washes I've done over the 90 days, but it would be at least 180, probably more like 250.

:beer:Thank you for that link, I am going to give it a try;)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I got a box of the Asda Sensitive powder and to be fair, it seems to clean ok, but the clothes don't really smell that fresh tbh, even after using a full cup full per wash as well as Asda sensitive conditioner:eek: I do like my washing to smell of clean washing, so I will use this box up and then order from Mr Suds, will let you know how I get on:cool:

nettos was bought out by Asda, 147 stores, but asda had to sell some, and i believe the nettos stores which where bought back are now called something else with a big O, i also believe the brand nettos used to sell is the same company that makes the ones lidl and aldi sell. its like unilever who makes bold, persil etc,
In May 2010, Netto UK was bought by Asda for £778m to increase its smaller store portfolio. The rebranding of 147 former UK Netto stores under the Asda name was complete by the end of the summer of 2011. Competition laws required Asda to sell the remaining 47 stores to other companies such as Morrisons, new convenience store UGO, and other retailers.
On 30 September 2011, Netto UK ceased trading.

and a little info on UGO
UGO is a convenience store in the United Kingdom owned by Haldanes Group and was started in January 2011.
They acquired 20 mid-size Netto supermarkets from the Asda Supermarket chain and turned them into UGO stores, these stores are-
Biddulph, Blackburn, Burnley, Broxburn, Barnsley (2 stores exist here), Boothferry, Boulevard, Charles Hollywood, Eston, Hartlepool, Hessle Road, Hull, Lundwood, Monk Bretton,
