I like it...but instead of 4 tins of kidney beans and baked beans how about some cannellini beans or pinto beans or black eye beans 95p for 500 grams dried beans. Just for some more variety that's all...

oh brill, for reasons I won't go into I couldn't do it this week so very pleased to see others are in the same boat. Of course the irony that I as a well-fed well-resourced bod have the luxury of choosing is not lost on me. But now doing a serious plan for next week.

just a few suggestions that might bring your costs down abit

If you are able to shop around you can get 4 tins of beans for £1 in iceland (and in many other shops on offer but thats icelands normal price), it's also usually possible to get tinned tomatoes at the same price.

If you can get to a poundland they have 3 tins of tuna for £1.

Iceland eggs are also slightly cheaper depending on how many you need they do 12 for £1.

I noticed you had carrots but the only place a see them being used is in the cottage pie and possibly the chilli, if it was me i'd swap the carrots and sweetcorn out for a bag of value mixed veg which is slightly cheaper.

Also tesco do a sunflower spead 500g for 75p unless your planning on using loads.

Ive purposely not chosen the very cheapest in all of the foods as you often can't get them. I do the full rounds of the supermarkets as Ive got a car and I do use Iceland a lot. Yes-th carrots could well be cut down to half of what I suggested but Id serve them in the chilli the cottagepie and the fish pie-Id use whatever was in the house. Now I cannot get tuna or tinned toms lower than my quote although its possible but this is why I didnt quote the lowest price but chose an average low price. Iceland I think have put up their eggs a bit now so not sure if they are still £1. Icelands beans do vary and again-often on offer at £1 but for reason above Ive quoted higher. I think I could reduce quantities of a couple of things though and replace with a bag of mixed veg or some extra spuds or something. Im not going to actualy do the challenge at the mo-its a problem for us as my DH is on chemo and can only eat certain foods/balance of foods and is unpredictable in what he has a taste for. However Im going to try to do it myself but Ive got a stash of whoopsied and Approved foods which Ive bought at rock bottom prices so it wont really be realistic.
Today I had the porrige made with water and honey from our hives. Lunch I will have HM bread with half tin spaghetti hoops so thats about 22p so far plus a couple of cuppas.I'm making a victoria sponge now with App foods reduced price flour and a filling of value lemon curd-half a jar-I will cost this later. I am also making stewed fruit which we grew in our garden with reduced custard from App foods so its only costing me sugar and a packet of custard which cost approx 20p for at least 4 servings. Again-I havent included anything like this as I am assuming that someone who has to live on £1 a day hasnt got the luxury of a nice big garden which I Take for granted.

  • Also Folks Aldi are doing mushy peas for 8p
Morrisons are doing value custard for 6p a packet.
I just hope this helps someone, I would love to do as I eat very little, but shift workers and kids comming in at different times and ohh I dont like this and that. I might do it myself as a challenge.
Has anyone seen my last marble:A:A:A:A

  • Got some mushy peas for 6p per tin in Tesco a couple of days ago. also got cooking bacon and made pea and bacon soup using a couple of value stock cubes as well-this was enough for 4 servings. Cost approx 20p for the lot.
Had porridge with water for breakfast the soup for lunch with HM bread.
Then a slice of HM cake with lemon curd filling(18p per slice)
Teatime truthfully I was stuffed! Had half of a HM frozen curry and took the rest to work on Saturday. Total cost for day of 65p for fod and approx 15p for tea and coffee so 80p total.

  • Hello, is anyone planning to do the Live Below the Line challenge this year? I'm still thinking about it, trying to figure out what I'd buy for a fiver.

I'd like to try it but I know I'd fail :o

I might just make a donation to our local food bank instead. It has been interesting to read over the last couple of years.
