You set me on the right road nickyhutch so thank you- I've deleted them all in one go !!! I did it by changing mail options to a scrolling list without preview pane - found it in options which is where I also found the change to 200.
I could then check the delete box and it selected all 16000! took my pc about 10 mins to finish it but I'm now all sorted.
