Vista is a much securer OS that XP is, it will always have holes in it, and as its new, most of them will be found at a higher pace until it settles down. As said before, if it can be made, it can be cracked, i wonder why they spend millions trying to stop it. Dont spend, and offset that cost to lowering the price, so many more would buy it.

You cannot transform XP into Vista, simple. You cannot get Dreamscene or Aero on vista, 2 of the biggest things in Vista's new interface. Vista, out of the box, is much securer too. Not to mention all other software will be written for Vista now. So eventually XP will be come obsolete.

Please dont say "why bother upgrading" as ICT is all about moving forward.

Found a nifty money saving secret concerning Microsoft's Vista.

Buy a CHEAPER ''Upgrade'' version of VISTA instead of the full version and follow the steps here: http://windowssecrets.com/comp/070201#story1.

There are many stories and complaints concerning Vista's price being too high, someone had to make a stand at some time.

Whats supposed to be the big secret???? Microsoft themeselves tell you how to do a clean install of the upgrade package.. including the so called "secret" option described in the page posted..

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930985

and before someone posts about not seeing it its under METHOD 1

    Method 1
Start the installation from a compliant version of Windows, such as Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows XP, or Microsoft Windows 2000. After you have started the installation, you can select Custom at the installation choice screen to perform a clean installation.

Any software created by humans can be cracked by humans. Its as simple as that.

This does not, however, mean that just because it has been cracked, it is suddenly no longer secure. As I'm sure you are aware, the cracks circulating (and there are a few of them) are designed to circumvent the product activation. Please tell me how this activation crack is making Vista less secure as an OS?

I will gladly answer your question if you tell me where exactly I put the message that its less secure as an OS. I said its been cracked. Suggest you read it again.

The fact that its cracked, indicates a FLAW, hence its own security has been breached

The key word there being "Security". You suggest that because the OS copy protection mechanism has been breached it is therefore less secure. How?

In any case, my point has been backed up by several others.

banger, I had huge icons and text when I got Vista (pre-installed on a new machine). I managed to change them but I'm at work at the moment and so I'm nit sure exactly what I did. I'll have a look this afternoon and let you now. I'm sure I changed the icons to "classic view" but I can't remember where. All it did was resize them to a more sensible size.
It's my problem, it's my problem

OK found it now, right click anywhere on the desktop and clcik view. That should give you the option to chaneg the icon size between Large, medium and Classic.

The classic option is the smallest.

Anything that is breached, has had its own security dented, thats why its breached. The word BREACHED , means, broken into. If your bank account was breached, would you consider that to be a lack of security. Or would you think it was breached by some wizard, so the bank dont have to reinburse you any losses from your account, because obviously its not the banks lack of security.

My original post I stand by and like you is also backed up by several others, that its already been cracked, and that is its flaw. or its hole, or its weakness, or its opening, or its gap in security.

So what exactly is your point?

Cheaper still is the Academic version, if you can find it anywhere (quite rare at the moment) which is around £50 for the Home Premium Upgrade edition, which is the only edition available for Academic.

To qualify, you need to be a teacher, be in education, or live with someone who is in full time education (i.e. anyone with kids).

But, unlike Academic licences of old, you don't have to prove anything to get it.
