From what i've read from other sites if you buy the OEM version of Vista then it ties the product key to your motherboard, which is fine until you go to upgrade your motherboard only to find Vista will no longer activate. Anyone with an OEM version able to confirm this?

    This is correct.

The OEM licence is intended for system builders and manufacturers to install on pre-built machines. It is licenced such that the software in question, Windows Vista, is tied to that particular machine and the licence cannot be transferred.

Upgrading is possible, but only minor components. Changing the motherboard will result in a failed activation as it is classed as a different computer.

    Oh, those kind of patches.

Doesn't mean it's flawed or full of holes. Otherwise you could apply that to most licensed software out there. Opera before it became free, Nod32, Kaspersky, Ms Office, Adobe Photoshop etc...

The fact that its cracked, indicates a FLAW, hence its own security has been breached. The fact that it has been breached, indicates its got a hole. Its not mathematics, that applies to ANY licensed software that has been hacked or cracked, any simpleton would tell you that.

  • I'm not sure if Vista OEM will work the same way as XP OEM, but when I replaced both my motherboard and CPU (due to failure) with newer models all I had to do was call them up and confirm this and they reactivated it. As long as you're replacing failed components and not upgrading for the hell of it, the OEM version will still work. I was nervous about calling Microsoft (I'm the same way about the police, despite being quite law abiding), to be honest, but they were nice and very helpful.

(The reason my replacements were upgrades was that my motherboard and CPU were more than 4 years old, so the same models were no longer available)

Any software created by humans can be cracked by humans. Its as simple as that.

This does not, however, mean that just because it has been cracked, it is suddenly no longer secure. As I'm sure you are aware, the cracks circulating (and there are a few of them) are designed to circumvent the product activation. Please tell me how this activation crack is making Vista less secure as an OS?

Still yet to see any benefit from swapping to Vista. It's too expensive, needs lots of RAM/CPU to run well and you will do all Microsoft's bug fixing, all for something that just looks a little nicer !!

As long as your XP is up to date and all the security holes plugged then save your money.

Havent we all been bug fixing xp for the past few years????? EVERY piece of software gets updated including anti-virus and security from every company practically on a weekly basis with brand new versions almost every year.. Why does microsoft doing the same thing mean such a big deal to everyone... If the didnt update or fix issues then people would moan about lack of support..

And as for only looking a bit nicer.... You definately dont know what you are talking about...

It is only flawed because the end user chooses so... I havent yet seen an influx of people complaining because hackers have hacked in and activated thier product without thier permission... Thats like saying your house is not secure because you can get in using your key...

It just means the copy protection has been circumvented, that doesn't necessarily relate to the security of the system. And from what I've read the "crack" is more of a work around, and not a perfect solution.

Also it doesn't apply to any software that has been hacked or cracked. Photoshop for example, uses a very simple serial-number system. You can find a serial on the web easily and use it with a copy of Photoshop. This doesn't mean it's any less secure, just that the copy protection isn't very good.

Well I'm using Vista and so far I haven't been flooded with spyware and viruses. The doom mongers have been saying how it will be riddled with bugs and full of holes but I'm not aware of any security issues apart from the rather silly voice recognition one.

So far it hasn't crashed and has been stable and easy to use. It recognised and had drivers built in for all of my hardware bar my scanner and I got the driver from the Canon site for that. I'm very happy with it and the kids think it's great because of Purble Place! :D

It may not be perfect but it's a big improvement over XP and by far the best consumer MS OS I've ever used and I've been using them since the days of DOS on an original IBM PC XT.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die
