Cleaning the dogs toilet area

Our two dogs use the back yard to go to the toilet, mostly just for pees but the occassional number twos and I was wondering if anybody could suggest an old style cleaning product to clean it with?

I'd like something natural (if that's the right word) like how you use vinegar, bicard of soda for certain things etc. I'd need something with quite a strong smell though otherwise it might get stinky?

Thanks in advance.

    Hiya :)

To be honest I think your best bet is to ask on our MoneySaving for Pets board.

I'll leave your query here for a while to collect an answer or two and then move it across for you.

    Good luck :)

I use Jeyes fluid I am afraid, it's the only thing that really disinfects the area, I have an old smelly incontinent dog. Jeyes is on offer in Lidl at the moment

I use the basics/value disinfectant. I dilute it in the watering can and soak the area. For the last few summers I have used a well known brands plant fertiliser hose attachment which I refilled with disinfectant, but we have the hose pipe ban this year so I will have to keep on going with the watering cans!

I use Zoflora at the mo :( We're trying to sell our house and we have two dogs and a small garden, so it can quickly get stinky if I don't clean is straight up, I'm using zoflora to make it smell nice as well as disinfect. It is expensive I suppose and I probably don't use enough - I put a few caps in a mop bucket of hot water, tip it onto the patio and sweep it down then leave it to dry.

I did buy some Safe4Pets fluid but it worked out quite expensive, so now I just keep them off the area until it's dry instead.

I know sunlight does kill bacteria but I have two young children and waiting for the sun to shine let alone enough to kill bacteria isn't an option :(

I'm sorry if this isn't a huge help, but I will be watching this thread for tips! I hope that you find an answer. x

Vinegar can be great for urine smells, I used to use it for my indoor rabbits' litter trays.
Biological washing powder is another one that's recommended - and has a much nicer smell than vinegar!
Alternatively, not quite as natural, but the cleaner Mistral is well raved-about in doggy circles, especially for this kind of issue (cleaning patios, decking, artificial lawns, etc). It's a bit like the Stardrops of the canine world.
  • We just use multi purpose value cleaner and a spot of cheap bleach. It only costs pennies. But you have to keep the dogs off it till it dries. We are putting slate down as ours have wrecked the garden.
Has anyone seen my last marble:A:A:A:A

I'm just googling 'stalosan' - it seems quite good, but it's a powder you sprinkle onto a wet area to disinfect it. Looks good so far, but again not that o/s I suppose.

    Found this thread http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=49519

It sounds pet friendly and possibly cheaper than Jeyes.

Oh wow! I've just found the Odourfresh liquid on the Mistral website after you mentioning it there - they do it in some funky smells! Thanks so much for that, I might have to place an order!

I have used cinnamon zoflora, the cinnamon does seem to disguise it more than most and they seem to do the Mistral product in cinnamon and apple! I am far too giddy about that! :rotfl:

We use Mistral at the boarding kennels. It's very good stuff indeed. We have found the lavander one is particularly good.

  • Please be aware of neighbours gardens. Our neighbour used to clean their garden (completely concreted) with Jeyes fluid. The only run off was our garden - it killed many plants and ruined the top soil. :(
    Put the kettle on. ;)
