It will vary significantly in cost if you do, or do not take into account winter loads.

I've noted in the past that if you can find a supplier that will accept a standard tarrif without requiring you to change meters, then it may well work out cheaper to switch to an E7 tariff, then back to normal twice a year if you have E7 heating.

    Something else to think about.

There is a standard list of E7 that can switch between the rates but its not well understood by suppliers which has meant some companies I won't name breaching compliance for the sake of billing. However, if you switch to a supplier who takes their compliance more seriously, you get told you can't have it and they are in the right as the other supplied gave something try knew they shouodnt.

So, if you need to check if your meter is compatible, ask them to check your Standard Settlement Code (SSC) to ensure it is compliant on Profile Class (PC) 1 since E7 is PC2. They also need to check your Meter Timeswitch Class (MTC) is available for your tariffs payment type (Credit, Prepayment, etc) and if so, you can switch between the 2 and all the supplier does is change your tariff with them and update your PC and MTC codes with the distributors registration service. Technically in this industry they could do that daily.

I have been on this for years and never understood it,not that I have really tried to be honest until now.
As it happens I,ve just had a bill (£500!) Anyhow they are saying I will use 10138kw in nxt 12 months and this will cost me £1052 (live in n/east).....so by your calculation this is the better deal ? If I have got it right.
I live in a 1 bedroom flat (small flat) and my consumption seems crazy when I look at what other people say for 3 bed semi etc.
Others living here don't get it either and use around the same as me.
I don't have loads of stuff running (just the usual crap everyone does) how do we spend so much on tiny flats??
Also, does this mean that it doesn't make a difference using it day or night,as at times (when remember) do washing at night as figured getting cheaper rate then.
    God.....I'm still confused aren't I.....bit dumb with this stuff,sorry.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

The number 1 consumer of energy is heating. Turn the heating off and your energy bills will plummet....but....you will be cold. If you are on E7 with storage and hot water heating then time everything to run at night and you will save a small amount.

Do you have an Economy 7 tariff?

    Do you have storage heaters?

    Which company are you with?

The example I gave was for the Midlands.

Assuming you are on Economy 7 you need to find out how much you used on cheap rate, and how much on day rate. Armed with that information you can then go on a comparison website and see which is the best tariff for yourself.

If you can post those figures on here, we will work it out for you.

As said above Heating and hot water are the heavy consumption items. That said 10,138kWh is not high consumption. Many people will use 4,000kWh or so on normal electrical items - TV, fridge, washing machine, cooker etc etc.

If the OP has an estimated annual cost of £1,052 for 10,138kWh then I doubt that they are on E7-or if so using a tiny amount on cheap rate E7.
OP, if so it makes no difference when you use the power-it is the same at all times of day and night.

    Not understood!

The more they use on E7 the cheaper their total bill.

e.g. 50% cheap rate use with NPower will cost about that sum.

I have been on economy seven for a number of years and have read on here conflicting advice as to how much electric you need to use a night to make it viable. I use my dishwasher, washing machine, tumble drier, phones and laptops on charge at night and a few other little bits when it goes off at 8 am. in summertime. Well I have just had a letter from Eon and it says that as I have used more than 16per cent of my electric at night it has paid me to be on economy seven. This being the case surely more customers could benefit from it. This seems quite a low useage needed at night to make it pay.

    Hi matty

As others have said, the amount of electricity that needs to be used at night before Economy 7 becomes beneficial varies by area, tariff etc.

However, I have to say, the 16 per cent we've advised seems a little low to me. I would certainly double check this.

Pop your details on to one of the comparison sites. This will give you a good indication and also show how we stack up against the other suppliers.

Alternatively, give us a call or drop an email to the address in my Profile if you prefer. I'll be happy to check.
