You took the engine and the broken car to a garage for them to fit the replacement engine? How long did it take them to find out the replacement engine was faulty and why have they had the car for 3 weeks?

You should be able to get the money back for the engine (or get it repaired/replaced).

However all that labour you have authorised the garage to undertake is money down the drain I'm afraid with them taking the old engine out, putting the replacement in, trying to get it working, now having to take it out again, I fear you've already amassed a £700 bill there alone.

what am saying tho is that we only saw the other engine in a car then after that we had nothing to do with the engine as the engine was picked up by the garage. how long should a garatee be on something like that

I'm a bit puzzled by a garage that needs a week to "try and start" an engine and can still only say "it's broken".

There are only 3 thinks that will stop an engine from starting - no compression, no spark, or no fuel. They should be able to at least give a definite answer about which of those 3 it is, even if they haven't found the cause (which they should have by now).

Until they can do that, you can't even be certain that your old engine was "broken" because most non-starts are NOT caused by "needing a new engine" - in fact, if you do need a new engine it's usually very obvious because the old one will have been noisy and / or smoky for a long time, or will have stopped with a big bang while you were driving it (possibly throwing bits of itself over the road).

Given that, I'd be a little doubtful of how "professional" the garage is and be thinking about getting a second opinion before making any decisions.

Did you see it running in the other car? If you did then it's even more likely that the garage is doing something wrong.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Can you give us the facts in brief points:

What was wrong with the original engine? How was that diagnosed?

Who diagnosed the original fault? Is it the same garage that is now trying to fit the replacement?

Did you see the replacement engine actually working? How?

How did you pay for the replacement engine? If it's on credit card then you could try claiming from them IF you can prove it was faulty at the time and not something the garage has done since they got their hands on it.

What actually is wrong with the replacement engine?

you are in difficult water here beckie because you are in the middle
you need to ascertain if its the engine or the fitters or whether the problem stems from say your car being a diesel and it had contaminated fuel in it
until you can be sure who is wrong then you cannot go forward with claims for compensation

to be honest i see this situation very often and the best advice i always give if asked is to step away from the situation and do an assesment of the best way forward
this often entails scrapping the broken car and moving on to pastures anew
i see this doesnt help you but might help someone else in a similar predicament

i know a mechanic who fitted a brand new out of the box engine a few weeks back and couldnt get it started, turns out on this year the manufacturers fitted two different cranks and the bit for the crank sensor to get the engine to run are not interchangeable
this car eventually was sold on a large trade site as non running and the owner took a hit of well over £4000 just to get it out of his head (he supplied the engine see)
