It's official! Petrols are now cheaper to run than diesels!!!!!
Options
Planned a route on google maps which now has an option to work out fuel cost for the journey based on average saloon
It default to giving fuel costs for petrol - I switched it to deisel and the costs went up - arrghhhhhhhh
I've always driven silky quiet, lightening fast petrol cars in the past
Now driving my first diesel which is a noisy, under performing clatter bucket that vibrates my fillings out at town speeds and allllllllllll to save a couple quid at the pump

Anyone wanna buy a clatter bucket???

There was an article in the Times a few weeks ago that said if you buy a new diesel car it would take 9 years driving 12,000 miles a year just to break even over buying the same models petrol equivalent. The example they used was a VW Polo. Very interesting reading.0

not sure if you're being serious or not but that's a load of rubbish.
I drive a 1.5 diesel megane and it's hardly any noisier than a petrol, it has more torque and is much cheaper to run. I average between 55-60mpg with a mix of town and motorway driving. A full tank gets me nearly 700 miles. Find me a petrol that has the same economy AND performance.0 -

Only if you get shot of it before the DPF and DMF give up.
When calculated over long term ownership and considering the extra parts that diesels have (which are never cheap to replace), newer diesels are far more expensive to run.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

But with some cars there's not much choice. E.g. Mondeo - the petrol engines get cr*p reviews and we couldn't find one with a petrol engine to test drive within a reasonable distance anyway! So, we got a diesel.0

The OH and I do roughly the same journey to work. I have a diesel and they have a petrol, both 2 months old and exactly the same price when bought.
Just for curiosity I worked out the difference in fuel costs based on actual MPG and the diesel is around £440 a year cheaper.
Regardless of cost, I prefer diesel cars.0 -

Not all modern deisel cars have DPF, my 08 reg Vectra 1.9 CDTi doesn't, nor did my 06 reg Astra 1.3 CDTi so that may only be an issue on certain models or if buying brand new, also many petrol cars have DMF.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0 -
I have my first diesel car and it's noisy when starting but I get good mpg from it. Would I buy another one? No. It feels like driving a tractor." The greatest wealth is to live content with little."

I may be wrong but I thought DPF problems were mainly in cars owned by people who just use them for pottering round town and never let the engine get hot enough for the DPF to clean itself?
I drive over 20,000 miles a year and a petrol would cost me much more to run. Servicing my diesel isn't much more expensive than a petrol (£95 for an interim service and about £150 for a full service, so that's £245 every 24,000 miles).0 -

I think your missing the point, this isn't a comparison of mpg figures torque or whatever.
It's a comparison of running costs which includes:
a) Fuel
b) Depreciation
c) Servicing
d) Initial cost
Now we know that diesels are generally better mpg wise, but we also know that servicing costs are generally higher and initial costs are also higher. So you may be 'saving' money doing 55-60mpg but it costs you more in the first place!0 -

Do tractors drive like the 330d?
You can't tell us cause you've driven neither.0
